About the Group

The Economics Group leads HM Treasury’s analysis of developments in the UK economy and advises ministers on the implications for the Government’s economic strategy. It provides expert economic analysis and advice for Ministers. Economics Group provides support for the UK Government’s economic and social research professions, including running centralised recruitment and the annual conferences.

About the role

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead some of the Treasury’s key cross-cutting analysis to help shape economic policy and improve lives. You will work closely with other teams across HMT, and with a wide range of external experts including Bank of England, the OBR, and the ONS. The role involves creating and deploying high-impact analysis and evidence to improve economic policy decisions affecting people across the UK and shape the government's economic narrative. It also involves extensive leadership and working flexibly as part of a friendly, inclusive and high performing team where we support each other to develop ourselves and our positive contribution to society. At times this may include changes to responsibilities to respond to HMT priorities.

Some of the responsibilities of this role include:

  • Lead HMT’s analysis of the supply-side of the economy and productivity growth, providing timely mentorship to Ministers and high-level government representatives.
  • Provide key briefing on productivity data and productivity statistics releases.
  • Lead on impactful and fast-paced analysis at the budget.
  • Provide leadership to the team and provide flexible matrix management to economists.
  • Lead and deliver the annual review of the supply side of the economy, working closely with the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) and bringing together analysis across HM Treasury, the rest of government, and the Bank of England.
  • Deliver high-impact projects to improve our understanding of the economic supply chain.
  • Deliver regular impactful assessments of the output gap (the balance of supply and demand in the economy) bringing together evidence from across Economics Group to reach an assessment of whether there is excess demand or slack in the economy. This assessment is vital to informing overall fiscal and macroeconomic strategy.

About You:

You have an undergraduate degree in Economics, or equivalent work experience and possess a first or upper second-class honours degree with at least half of the modules in economics. Your strong skills across economics technical frameworks include the ability to analyse multiple and complex datasets at pace to bring out the most meaningful insights, as well as communicating economic policy to non-technical audiences. You have proven experience leading sophisticated analytical or policy work. You work with others to assess diverse evidence and apply good judgment to weigh factors and reach conclusions under uncertainty. You can build and harness effective relationships, and communicate effectively with Ministers, seniors and both internal and external stakeholders (domestic and/or international) with different priorities and objectives, breaking down complex information into clear policy choices and flexing communication style to deliver objectives. You build good relationships with colleagues from different teams allows you to use these connections to drive goals forward.
