They are now looking for a proactive Associate/Principal Engineer with a mechanical engineering background to support the delivery of major water and wastewater non-infrastructure projects. Role Overview
In this role, you will lead the development and delivery of mechanical engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects, providing technical leadership and expertise throughout the project lifecycle. You will be responsible for overseeing mechanical design, ensuring technical quality and compliance, managing complex technical challenges and supporting the successful delivery of projects from concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover. This role offers the opportunity to influence project outcomes, shape technical approaches, and contribute to the growth of our engineering capability. You will mentor and support the development of engineers within the team, provide technical assurance, and play a key role in maintaining engineering standards and driving continuous improvement.
Collaboration is central to the role. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams - including civil, mechanical, electrical, process, and control & instrumentation engineers - as well as construction, operations, clients, contractors, and other external stakeholders to deliver safe, innovative, and high-quality engineering solutions that meet client and business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and review of mechanical engineering design deliverables, including calculations, specifications, technical schedules, equipment layouts, drawings, design reports, and procurement documentation.
- Develop and approve engineering calculations, technical specifications, design documentation, and procurement deliverables.
- Engage with clients, contractors, suppliers, utilities, and regulatory bodies as the discipline lead.
- Lead the specification, selection, and technical evaluation of mechanical equipment, plant, and systems.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient project delivery.
- Manage technical risk, design changes, and engineering decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support the preparation of proposals, fee estimates, scopes of work, and technical inputs for bids and tenders.
- Engage with clients, contractors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to develop effective working relationships and resolve technical issues.
- Provide technical support during procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover activities as required.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, continuous improvement, and the application of new technologies and engineering practices.
- Contribute to resource planning, technical capability development, and discipline growth.
- Support business development activities through client engagement and the development of trusted relationships.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or demonstrable progress towards professional registration with a recognised engineering institution.
- Significant mechanical engineering experience delivering complex projects within the water, wastewater, utilities, infrastructure, industrial, or process engineering sectors.
- Experience in the design and delivery of mechanical systems such as pumps, pipework, valves, pressure systems, hydraulic calculations, mechanical plant, and associated process equipment.
- Proven ability to lead the technical delivery of multidisciplinary engineering projects from concept through to completion.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering design principles, applicable standards, legislation, and industry best practice.
- Experience preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and design documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage technical risk, design reviews, quality assurance, and engineering governance.
- Experience working collaboratively with clients, contractors, suppliers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions.
- Ability to mentor and develop engineers, providing technical guidance and supporting professional development.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential due to site travel requirements).
