Role Description

The Heavy Goods Vehicle Technician is a full-time, on-site position based in Birmingham, responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing HGVs and trailers to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance. Day-to-day tasks include carrying out routine and scheduled maintenance, performing safety inspections, fault diagnosis, engine servicing, and electrical repairs. The role involves preparing vehicles and trailers for MOT, supporting roller brake testing, and completing repairs such as commercial vehicle bodywork, curtain and roller shutter door fixes, tail lift and LOLER work, and trailer refurbishment. The technician will accurately document all work, follow workshop quality control processes, and adhere to relevant compliance and safety standards. The position may also involve supporting breakdowns, working occasional unsociable hours, and collaborating closely with workshop colleagues and mobile engineers to minimize vehicle downtime.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess strong technical skills in HGV and trailer maintenance, including diagnostics, engine servicing, and mechanical repairs.
  • Candidates should possess practical skills in electrical fault-finding and repair on commercial vehicles and trailers.
  • Candidates should possess experience in MOT preparation, safety inspections, brake testing support, and compliance with DVSA and industry standards.
  • Candidates should possess capabilities in welding, fabrication, and general bodywork repairs for commercial vehicles and trailers.
  • Candidates should possess effective problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow structured quality control procedures.
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills, the ability to interpret technical documentation, and work collaboratively within a workshop team.
  • Relevant vocational qualifications (e.g., Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent) and proven experience as an HGV or commercial vehicle technician are highly beneficial.
  • A valid driving license (HGV license advantageous), familiarity with health and safety
