A major UK civil engineering contractor is looking for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to support a long-term earthworks package within a main contractor joint venture on a nationally significant infrastructure scheme near Portsmouth. This programme runs well beyond 2028, offering long-term stability and a major career opportunity. The contractor is a respected, multi-generation, family-run civil engineering business with a strong track record across highways, remediation, flood defence and renewable energy projects. They are known for high standards, strong safety culture and long-term investment in their teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Health & Safety across a major earthworks package
- Carry out inspections, audits, RAMS reviews and toolbox talks
- Ensure compliance with CDM, JV procedures and client standards
- Support safe systems of work for excavation, plant, haul roads, lifting and traffic management
- Investigate incidents and near misses, implementing corrective actions
- Liaise with JV partners, client H&S teams and regulators
- Produce clear reports, documentation and safety briefings
- Promote behavioural safety and continuous improvement
Experience Required
- Proven experience as a H&S Manager or Senior H&S Advisor in civils, earthworks or heavy construction
- Strong understanding of excavation, plant operations and high-risk activities
- NEBOSH Construction (minimum)
- Confident communicator able to influence site teams and subcontractors
- Experience working for a main contractor or JV is highly beneficial
- Proactive, solutions-focused approach with strong reporting skills
