Toshiba Europe Limited has pioneered the development of quantum communication systems over the past decade, setting new standards for cryptography and data security. We are currently seeking an Optical Engineer to develop next generation secure communication products at Toshiba's Quantum Technology Centre in Cambridge, UK. In this role, you will develop optical systems that lie at the heart of our quantum products.
You should be able to demonstrate past success in the development of optical systems in products. You will join a dynamic organisation at the forefront of the quantum industry, with the opportunity to play a major role in the development of quantum networking technology.
Responsibilities:- Designing, prototyping and implementation of opto-electronic systems in collaboration with colleagues in Optics, Electronics, Software and Firmware teams
- Development of appropriate test equipment for hardware, including standard operating procedures for development and production
- Creating and managing high quality documentation (requirements capture, design specifications, tests plans, analysis and recommendations etc.)
- Contributing to the optical systems design portfolio, ensuring all documentation is maintained, updated and version controlled
- Driving continuous improvement on existing products, including capturing accurate and detailed documentation
- Providing mentorship to staff and contractors, according to business needs
- Delivering projects to schedule, including the management of the budgets for specific projects
- Degree level qualification in Engineering or Physics or an equivalent subject, providing a strong Optics content
- Demonstrable experience of leading projects in Optical Engineering for new product development and/or manufacturing
- Experience in the design and improvement of characterisation equipment for electro-optical components and sub-systems
- Strong experience in establishing and maintaining product development practices from concept through to realisation and/or manufacture
- Excellent planning skills, including the ability to schedule, prioritise and drive work to completion
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
- Ability to autonomously analyse data and formulate sound hypotheses and recommendations
- Ability to write and present comprehensive technical design documentation for internal and external use (e.g. requirements, specifications and test reports etc)
- Leading projects with other teams in the business to ensure system designs are aligned to both technical and commercial requirements
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to put new solutions into practice
- A diligent work ethic and attention to detail
- Strong multi-tasking skills with an ability to adapt to changing business priorities at short notice
- Ability to work independently, across multiple tasks and projects
- Experience in designing and building automated test equipment (software programming, interfacing with control electronics and optical components/systems)
- Engineering experience in the communications industry with design responsibilities
- Experience in building an Intellectual Property portfolio
- Experience in team leadership
