Do you have strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and an interest in tax and finance within a complex organisation? We’re looking for an Assistant Accountant – Tax to join our Finance team and support the delivery of an efficient and effective tax function across the Group. This role will involve working closely with colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure tax compliance, improve processes, and support the provision of accurate financial information. This role is offered on a full time, permanent basis, working 37 hours per week. This position operates on a hybrid working arrangement, with office attendance required on Mondays and Tuesdays at our Liverpool City Centre office and the remainder of the week working from home. Travel may be required to our Warrington Office in line with business needs.
What you’ll be doing
- Assist with tax compliance across the Group, including VAT, CIS, Corporation Tax and SDLT, ensuring accuracy and adherence to current legislation.
- Support the preparation of timely and accurate data for tax returns, providing key information to enable submissions.
- Work with the Group Tax Accountant on annual tax computations and ongoing tax reporting requirements.
- Keep up to date with changes in tax legislation and guidance, applying this knowledge to day-to-day activities.
- Support the business in implementing tax-efficient practices and ensuring tax advice is applied appropriately.
- Assist in reviewing tax efficiency across Group companies, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of tax-compliant systems, controls, policies and procedures.
- Support process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments, HMRC, and external tax advisors.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accounting standards, as well as internal financial policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation to support a clear audit trail.
- Contribute to delivering value for money through effective financial practices and decision-making.
- Ensure all activities are carried out in line with health and safety requirements and equality and diversity principles.
What we’re looking for
- Part-qualified accountant (AAT or equivalent) or working towards a professional accountancy qualification.
- Knowledge or experience of tax (VAT, CIS, Corporation Tax), ideally within a social housing or similar environment.
- Experience of working in a finance or tax role within a large or complex organisation (desirable).
- Strong Excel skills, including the ability to analyse and interpret large datasets (e.g. PivotTables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS).
- Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to identify anomalies, trends, and risks in financial data.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Experience or interest in process improvement and automation.
- A proactive and flexible approach, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.
- A commitment to continuous professional development.
- An understanding of the importance of value for money, equality and diversity, and health and safety in the workplace.
Interview process
Candidates will be invited to attend an interview, which will include a competency-based discussion exploring relevant experience, technical knowledge, and skills required for the role, as well as a 30 minute Excel assessment. Interviews will be held at our Liverpool City Centre office on the 14th and 15th April 2026.
