We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and approachable to work within our team at Torre Abbey. If you love historic buildings, creating an excellent visitor experience and developing exhibitions this could be the role for you. Torre Abbey is Torbay’s most historic building complex dating from 1196. An ancient scheduled monument set within 17.8 acres of gardens and parkland. It’s an accredited museum owned by Torbay Council, home to a regionally important collection it’s been a centre of religious and artistic expression and hospitality for 800 years.
We are passionate about creating a universally welcoming environment, we work with a range of partners to develop a more accessible offer for our local community.
What you’ll be doing:
- You will deliver the day‑to‑day operations of visitor experience and high standards of presentation at Torre Abbey.
- Enabling a broad range of visitors to have outstanding and inspirational experiences through the consistent quality of warm welcome.
- You will help to develop and improve Torre Abbey’s interpretation and story in line with Torre Abbey’s spirit of place.
- You will lead the development and delivery of an innovative exhibitions and community engagement programme at Torre Abbey in line with historic listing designations.
This position is for a fixed term of 12 months from the start date.
Skills:
- Well‑developed skills in management and leadership, team‑working, communication, and organisation.
- Ability to demonstrate effective decision making and act quickly/flexibly when confronted with emergencies.
- Ability to work with varying pressures and deal with difficult situations and complaints.
- Ability to demonstrate effective and proven skills in financial management and reporting methods.
- Ability to demonstrate an effective creative approach to planning and delivering a variety of customer focused programmes and exhibitions.
Knowledge:
- Effective knowledge and understanding of what makes a good visitor experience in a heritage or tourism setting.
- Effective knowledge and understanding of exhibition development, delivery and curation.
- Effective knowledge and understanding of audience development in a heritage and tourism setting.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Experience working within the tourism or heritage setting with experience in a management role.
- Demonstrable experience of successfully securing grants and other fundraising to support exhibitions.
- Educated to A Level standard, preferably in heritage related subjects.
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
