Torbay Council is seeking a Facilities Management Multi‑Trade Technician to join its Facilities Management team, based on site at Fleet Walk Shopping Centre. This is a 2‑year fixed‑term opportunity within a public‑sector environment, supporting the delivery of a safe, welcoming and well‑maintained shopping centre for residents, businesses and visitors.
The post holder will play an important role in delivering a high‑quality, cost‑effective maintenance and repairs service, with a particular focus on painting and decorating works across Fleet Walk Centre. The role forms part of the Council’s wider commitment to maintaining public assets and delivering excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver reactive, planned and cyclical maintenance across Fleet Walk Shopping Centre.
- Undertake painting and decorating works to a consistently high standard throughout public areas.
- Carry out general multi‑trade maintenance and repairs including basic carpentry, plumbing, masonry and building works.
- Identify defects and carry out effective repairs in consultation with the Facilities Management Supervisor.
- Work in compliance with health and safety legislation, including manual handling and working‑at‑height requirements.
- Accurately record work activities using handheld devices and maintain effective communication with colleagues and customers.
- Support other trade colleagues and supervise external contractors when required.
- Participate in a rota system, which may include evening and weekend working.
This role offers the opportunity to work within a local authority Facilities Management service, contributing directly to the upkeep and presentation of a key community asset. The post provides varied, hands‑on work within a supportive team environment, with clear responsibilities and public‑sector values.
This post requires a Standard Criminal Level Check. This will show details of all spent and unspent convictions and adult cautions that have not been filtered in line with legislation. This position is for a fixed term of 24 months from the start date.
Skills- To be able to communicate effectively.
- To be able to use a computer – Outlook/Word/Edge.
- To have good experience in a variety of maintenance tasks to include decorating/general maintenance/building repairs.
- As this post meets the requirements of the Immigration Act 2016 (part 7), the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
- A good general understanding of Health & Safety within the workplace.
- An understanding of manual handling.
- A good understanding of working at height.
- A good understanding of the safe use of hand tools.
- A good understanding of risk assessments.
- Working in a construction or trades based sector.
- City & Guilds or NVQ qualification in multi‑trade disciplines.
- Educated secondary school standards or equivalent relevant experience.
- A full driving licence to enable the driving of FM vehicles.
- Health & Safety level 2-3.
