Ophthalmic Healthcare Support Worker

The Ophthalmology Department is recruiting a Band 3 Ophthalmic Healthcare Support Worker at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will assist registered nurses and senior clinical staff with planning, delivering, and evaluating care. You will support the nursing staff in maintaining high standards of patient health and well‑being, providing specialised support for patients undergoing diagnostic testing and assessment.
Main duties
- Assist with ophthalmic assessments including visual acuity, iCare ocular pressure measurements, ophthalmic diagnostics, and Schirmer\’s Test, following competency completion.
- Work alongside qualified professionals and participate in the delivery of planned care, using VDU equipment and ophthalmic diagnostic tools.
- Use Medisight and other IT software for documentation and communication.
- Maintain a professional knowledge of eye anatomy, physiology and common ophthalmic conditions.

Job responsibilities
- Exercise professional autonomy to make judgments and decisions in line with role expectations.
- Perform ophthalmic diagnostic tests on patients presenting with a variety of ophthalmic conditions.
- Prioritise tasks and recognise/report adverse findings to appropriate professionals.
- Support ophthalmic services, including peripheral clinics and theatre environments, independently with clinicians.

- Recent experience in the care sector.
- NVQ 2 in healthcare or equivalent.
