The purpose of this assignment is to stabilise and strengthen Health & Safety (H&S) governance, address immediate high-risk issues, and establish a robust, sustainable framework that transitions into Business as Usual (BAU) operations. The contractor will provide strategic and operational leadership across UK locations and, where required, European locations.
Key Objectives and Responsibilities
- Phase 1: Immediate Risk Mitigation
- Identify and address immediate high-risk H&S issues.
- Implement urgent corrective actions to mitigate exposure to legal, regulatory, and operational risk.
- Conduct an initial high-level risk review across all UK locations (and European locations where applicable).
- Reset and strengthen H&S governance structures.
- Clearly define and formalise executive and individual H&S responsibilities.
- Ensure accountability is embedded at Board, leadership, and operational levels.
- Review and update all critical H&S policies.
- Ensure policies are compliant with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Implement a simplified, coherent, and compliant policy framework.
- Establish clear policy ownership and accountability for ongoing maintenance and compliance.
- Establish a robust internal risk assessment framework.
- Implement a structured H&S assurance process across all relevant locations.
- Conduct proactive, regular on-site reviews to identify and address safety risks.
- Demonstrate visible leadership commitment to protecting the company, its employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Develop role-based H&S training plans for Directors and key staff.
- Ensure training aligns with governance responsibilities and legal duties.
- Embed accountability through competency-based development.
- Design and implement structured H&S reporting to the Board.
- Provide regular assurance updates covering risk exposure, compliance status, and mitigation progress.
- Support executive decision-making through clear, risk-based reporting.
- Ensure sustainable processes, governance, and ownership structures are in place.
- Support handover to permanent internal resources (if applicable).
- Provide clear documentation and transition plans to ensure continuity.
