TE Magnetics is the high temperature superconducting technology division of Tokamak Energy, focusing on developing advanced HTS solutions across fusion, power systems, and other markets. Work on power systems that don't yet exist. At Tokamak Energy, we're redefining how power is generated, controlled, and delivered using high‑temperature superconducting (HTS) technology. Within our TE Magnetics division, we're moving beyond traditional high‑voltage approaches—developing ultra‑high current, low‑voltage power architectures that are lighter, more efficient, and fundamentally different from anything in today's power systems.
We're now hiring a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to play a key role in our SuperDC programme—a first‑of‑a‑kind initiative focused on next‑generation power conversion. This is a hands‑on, technically deep role for someone who wants to own a problem end‑to‑end and turn bold ideas into working hardware.
What you'll be doing:
- Take ownership of power conversion subsystems from concept through to demonstrator
- Design and develop advanced power electronics systems (DC-DC converters, multi‑stage architectures, gate drive systems)
- Build and run high‑power experimental test programmes
- Apply first‑principles engineering to solve novel challenges
- Collaborate across HTS, systems, controls, and mechanical engineering teams
- Translate experimental learnings into robust, real‑world solutions
Why this role is different:
- Work on first‑of‑a‑kind systems, not incremental improvements
- Own a critical subsystem, not just a small part of a large team
- Operate in a high‑autonomy environment where engineers drive decisions
- Help shape the future of fusion and next‑generation power systems
Requirements:
- Strong experience in power electronics design, development, and testing
- Expertise in power conversion (converters, PSU design, control, switching technologies)
- Proven ability to work independently and own technical delivery
- Background in industrial or high‑power environments (not purely academic)
- Comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, experimental setting
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work across disciplines and stakeholders
We're especially interested in experience across DC-DC converters, multi‑stage converters, gate drive systems, high‑power testing, SiC/GaN technologies, converter topologies.
Benefits:
- Hybrid working; minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split; part‑time or job share options reviewed individually
- 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays and discretionary 3 festive days between Christmas and the New Year)
- Company pension scheme
- Eligible for company share option scheme
- Company bonus scheme, discretionary, dependent on performance
- A range of financial benefits including death in service and critical illness cover
- Cycle to work scheme
