Tokamak Energy is a global leader in fusion energy and high temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies. A major part of this is our end to end capability in HTS systems, from design to manufacturing.

This is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and delivering facilities management and capital investment across a complex, highly regulated technical environment. Reporting to the Head of Group Operations, you will lead a small but growing team while acting as a key partner to the wider business.

In the short term, the role is heavily focused on delivering a portfolio of capital projects, alongside establishing robust, scalable facilities operations. Over time, the balance will shift towards long-term operational excellence and continuous improvement.

This role combines strategic oversight with a hands-on approach — ideal for someone who is comfortable leading from the front, solving problems, and building capability in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilities Management
    • Develop and implement the facilities strategy aligned to organisational growth and operational requirements
    • Oversee day-to-day management of buildings, infrastructure, and utilities
    • Ensure full compliance with statutory, health & safety, and environmental regulations
    • Lead hard and soft services, including maintenance, security, and waste management
    • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance performance, efficiency, and sustainability
    • Drive energy management and carbon reduction initiatives
    • Establish fit-for-purpose processes and systems, particularly where they do not already exist
    • Apply a risk-based approach to asset management and maintenance
  • Capital Projects
    • Lead the planning and delivery of capital investment programmes, including refurbishments, upgrades, and new developments
    • Manage the full project lifecycle from concept through to completion
    • Develop business cases, budgets, and investment plans
    • Oversee a mix of internally managed and externally delivered projects
    • Act as client-side lead for larger projects delivered via third-party consultants
    • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to specification
    • Implement strong governance, reporting, and risk management frameworks
  • Financial & Commercial Management
    • Own and manage facilities and capital expenditure budgets
    • Drive cost optimisation and value engineering across both operations and projects
    • Procure and manage supplier contracts to ensure high performance and value
    • Monitor financial performance and deliver against budget and ROI expectations
  • Compliance & Risk
    • Ensure all facilities and project activities meet regulatory and organisational compliance standards
    • Lead risk management across facilities operations and capital delivery
    • Maintain business continuity and resilience plans
What Success Looks Like
  • Delivery of a complex portfolio of capital projects within the next 12–18 months
  • Establishment of robust, scalable facilities processes and governance
  • High levels of statutory compliance across all facilities activities
  • Effective management of a small but growing team and external partners
  • Strong, confident stakeholder management, including the ability to challenge where needed
  • A well-run, efficient, and resilient facilities function that supports business growth
Requirements
  • Essential
    • Proven experience in a senior facilities management and/or capital projects leadership role
    • Strong track record of delivering a broad range of complex capital projects (typically ranging from smaller upgrades through to multi-million-pound programmes)
    • Deep understanding of statutory compliance, including fire safety, Legionella, and building compliance requirements
    • Experience improving or establishing facilities processes, not just maintaining existing operations
    • Strong knowledge of building systems, engineering, and facilities operations
    • Commercial and financial acumen, including budget ownership
    • Experience managing multiple stakeholders, suppliers, and contractors
    • Experience leading small, multi-disciplinary teams
  • Desirable
    • Experience in highly regulated environments is strongly preferred, such as Life sciences / pharma, Energy, fusion, or nuclear
    • Exposure to non-standard or complex environments (e.g. unusual waste streams, specialist infrastructure)
    • Experience working in smaller or scaling organisations where processes are being built or refined
    • Experience working client-side on capital projects delivered via consultancies
    • Background in sustainability and energy management initiatives
    • Relevant professional qualifications or certifications (e.g. Engineering, Facilities Management, NEBOSH, IWFM, RICS, CIOB)
Benefits
  • Salary range £90,000 to £100,000 dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays, plus discretionary festive shutdown
  • Performance-led rewards including discretionary bonus, innovation and merit schemes
