We work with governments and industry to develop and bring fusion and HTS solutions to market through innovation and strategic partnerships. A major part of this is our end to end capability in HTS systems, from design to manufacturing.
Overview of the role
This is a hands‑on engineering role focused on designing and building instrumentation and data acquisition systems that support complex magnet and cryogenic environments. You will work across electronics, measurement systems, and lab‑based testing—developing everything from PCBs and wiring through to sensor integration and system commissioning. This is a newly created role within a growing team, offering broad scope and real ownership across full systems.
In this role, you will:
- Design and develop instrumentation and data acquisition systems for monitoring and controlling engineering systems
- Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and PCB designs
- Assemble and commission laboratory‑based test systems
- Install and integrate sensors such as temperature and resistance measurement devices
- Work with engineers and physicists to design and deliver testing facilities
- Collaborate with external partners on instrumentation and electronics development
- Define software requirements and support development of control systems
- Analyse test results and produce clear technical reports
Essential
- Background in electronics, electrical engineering, physics or similar
- Experience working with instrumentation or data acquisition hardware
- Strong understanding of measurement principles (accuracy, sensitivity, precision)
- Experience designing schematics and PCBs
- Hands‑on experience in a laboratory or test environment
- Solid understanding of electronic components used in measurement systems
Desirable
- Experience designing data acquisition PCBs
- Experience working in laboratory or experimental environments
- Familiarity with cryogenics or high magnetic field systems
- Experience with PXI, cRIO or similar systems
- Exposure to embedded systems, FPGAs or programming (e.g. C/C++ or LabVIEW)
Salary range up to £60,000 dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset. 25 days holiday + bank holidays, plus discretionary festive shutdown.
