Job Description:

As an Underwriter, you will accurately underwrite, mandate and complete mortgage and secured loan applications to ensure that we minimise risk to the business and reach the right customer outcome. Focusing on service delivery by following group lending criteria, policies and procedures, you will proactively manage customer and broker relationships whilst delivering a seamless level of service to increase future business.

As an Underwriter, we are looking for someone to:

  • Assess all higher value and complex cases from direct customers and broker intermediaries to make informed underwriting decisions that are in line with company policies, procedures and lending criteria
  • Assess the risk and provide a rationale on each application ensuring that the loan is affordable, and sustainable
  • Provide mortgage offers in accordance with agreed service levels
  • Identify cases of potential fraud at all stages of an application, ensuring timely investigation, escalation and reporting to minimise risk to the business and customer
  • Manage the end-to-end pipeline of cases for both pre‑ and post‑offer, using a proactive approach in managing brokers and third parties to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met
  • Liaise directly with acting solicitors to obtain the required completion documentation before ensuring funds are drawn down in line with the agreed completion dates
  • Act as a point of contact for intermediaries to answer their general and case specific queries

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Previous underwriting experience
  • Ability to make positive lending decisions on business unusual cases
  • Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • Experience of dealing with customers
  • Possess strong objection handling and problem solving skills
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail

Desirable:

  • Mortgage underwriting experience
  • Experience of managing mortgage broker relationships
  • Underwriting experience of bridging and term loans
