Inclusion and Participation Lead works frontline with children, young people and families—particularly those who are permanently excluded, accessing alternative provision, or experiencing bullying and disadvantage. The role supports children to be included, safeguarded and heard, and leads on the city‑wide Sunderland Youth Council and Youth Parliament.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing a caseload, providing early help and pastoral support, ensuring children are safe, engaged, and making progress in education or alternative provision, and driving participation and engagement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support participation activity, including Sunderland Youth Council.
  • Support children and young people who have been permanently excluded or are accessing alternative provision, ensuring safeguarding, engagement and progress.
  • Work directly with families through outreach, home visits and early help assessments.
  • Monitor attendance, engagement and outcomes, adjusting plans as needed.
  • Deliver evidence‑based programmes to support child development, behaviour and anti‑bullying.
  • Coordinate and support the citywide Anti‑Bullying Charter Mark.
  • Ensure the voice of the child is central to service development and decision‑making.

  • Strong understanding of participation, inclusion, safeguarding and early help.
  • Experience of multi‑agency working and coordinating support around the child.
  • The ability to assess, plan, review and measure progress against outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills and resilience to work in pressured environments.
  • A commitment to children’s rights, inclusion and participation.
  • Access to transport and willingness to work flexibly in the community.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Hold Level 3 or higher qualification in an appropriate discipline.
  • Level 2 English (Grade C GCSE or equivalent).
  • Level 2 Mathematics (Grade C GCSE or equivalent).
  • At least one accredited youth work, parenting, counselling, play therapy, mental health, domestic abuse, or relevant attendance training qualification.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
