Join our Team

Together for Children Sunderland is on a transformative journey to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people in Sunderland. We are an outstanding Ofsted-rated Children’s service, if you’re committed to helping children, families, and our community thrive and have the skills to support our mission, we would love to hear from you.

About the role

Together for Children’s Education Directorate is looking for a Prosecution Solicitor to oversee statutory school attendance enforcement and decide on the use of legal powers to improve attendance. Previous local government experience is not required; what matters most is your commitment to delivering high-quality legal service. After all possible measures have been taken to assist schools and families in improving attendance, it may be necessary to implement legal interventions such as Fixed Penalty Notices, parenting orders, Education Supervision Orders, or School Attendance Orders. In this role, you will be responsible for determining the most suitable course of legal action and ensuring its execution. Collaborating with Attendance Officers, schools, and other stakeholders, you will prepare and present cases in court for prosecution. A strong interest in education law is essential. The role demands excellent organisational, time management, and case management skills.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

We want you to apply if:

  • Are a Qualified Solicitor/Barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (with litigation advocacy rights).
  • Have a valid, current practising certificate issued by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to legally practise.
  • Have the ability to attend various courts across the North East Region.
