OUR PRACTICE: Tobit Curteis Associates LLP is a small, Cambridge based practice, specialising in architectural and collections conservation, with particular emphasis on the investigation, monitoring and control of the environment for historic buildings and collections. We work for institutions and private clients in the UK and abroad, with clients including York Minster, Blenheim Palace, Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, The Palace of Westminster, Hampton Court Palace, the National Trust, Historic England and the Getty Conservation Institute.

SALARY: £34,000 - £39,100 plus pension (depending on experience)

HOLIDAY: 25 days plus bank holidays

LOCATION: Work is to be based at our Cambridge office, from the associate’s home, and at sites throughout the UK (and possibly abroad)

JOB DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a building conservation professional (full time) to work with us on environmental survey, monitoring and control, both for historic buildings and collections. The key roles will be undertaking conservation surveys of historic buildings and collections, the design and maintenance of our environmental monitoring systems, and analysis of and reporting on the environmental data in order to advise our clients on the conservation of their buildings/collections. Additionally, working on conservation research projects, sometimes in collaboration with other project partners or institutions.

  • Conservation surveys of historic buildings and collections
  • Environmental monitoring including programming and testing of telemetric monitoring equipment and remote data acquisition
  • Maintenance of our network of monitoring systems both in our office and on site
  • Environmental data analysis and interpretation
  • Written reporting and presentation to clients
  • Advising on environmental monitoring and control for historic buildings and exhibitions
  • Graphic and photographic condition documentation
  • Related project and office administration

PERSON SPECIFICATION: We are seeking applicants with enthusiasm and a willingness to work on a wide range of projects requiring good problem solving skills. The technical range of skills the role requires is diverse and we expect to work with the successful applicant in developing areas outside their existing skill set and experience. Above all, we are looking for someone with a keen interest in historic buildings and collections, who is willing to bring their qualifications and experience to the role and to develop it.

  • Degree level or higher qualifications in a related conservation, architectural, engineering or building services discipline
  • A thorough understanding of conservation principles for historic buildings and collections
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring, data analysis and control
  • Good communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Good interpretation and report writing skills
  • Good IT skills (in particular Microsoft Office and graphics packages)
  • A self-starter with good time management skills and able to work to a deadline
  • The ability to work both as part of our team and alone on historic sites
  • The ability to work at height and outside
  • The ability and willingness to learn new skills
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • A full UK driving licence
  • A willingness to work additional hours as required and, on occasion, away from home
