About Toast

Toast is not a traditional accountancy firm. We work with owner-led businesses to provide clarity, control, and forward-looking financial insight. Our clients expect accuracy, responsiveness, and professionalism; internally, we expect the same. This role sits at the operational backbone of the firm. It is for someone who takes pride in order, accuracy, and keeping things running properly without drama.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Accounts Assistant with strong bookkeeping and administrative capability to support both client delivery and internal operations. This is not a junior or training role. You will be trusted to run your area independently, spot issues early, and keep both client records and internal processes clean and up to date. You will work closely with senior accountants and directors, freeing them to focus on advisory and higher-value work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Bookkeeping
    • End-to-end bookkeeping for a portfolio of owner-managed businesses
    • Xero processing: bank reconciliations, journals, accruals, prepayments
    • VAT return preparation and review (UK & ROI as applicable)
    • Maintaining clean, well-structured ledgers suitable for management accounts and year-end
    • Liaising with clients to resolve queries and missing information efficiently
    • Identifying anomalies or poor processes and flagging them early
  • Practice Administration
    • General practice administration and operational support
    • Onboarding new clients (data collection, system setup, checklists)
    • Managing client records, engagement documentation, and internal trackers
    • Supporting billing, WIP tracking, and fee admin
    • Keeping internal systems organised, current, and reliable
    • Acting as a dependable point of contact for routine client and internal queries

Required Experience & Skills

Essential

  • 3+ years experience in a bookkeeping or accounts role
  • Strong hands-on experience with Xero (non-negotiable)
  • Solid understanding of VAT and day-to-day accounting mechanics
  • High attention to detail and pride in accuracy
  • Ability to manage workload independently and meet deadlines
  • Clear, professional communication with clients and colleagues
  • Fluent in English

Desirable

  • Experience in an accountancy or advisory practice
  • Familiarity with Dext, Hubdoc, or similar tools
  • Exposure to management accounts support
  • UK or Irish accounting environment experience

What This Role Is (and Isnt)

This role is:

  • For someone experienced, reliable, and methodical
  • Operationally important; your work underpins everything else
  • Trusted and autonomous, not micromanaged

This role is not:

  • A graduate or training position
  • Pure data entry
  • A role for someone who is not yet comfortable working independently and who requires close supervision day-to-day

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • A calm, professional environment with high standards
  • Direct exposure to quality clients and senior decision-makers
  • A firm that values competence, clarity, and doing things properly

How to Apply

Please apply with a CV and a brief note outlining:

  • Your bookkeeping experience
  • Your level of Xero proficiency
  • Why this role suits how you like to work

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship.
