We are working with an incredible university press who already have an established trade list and are now looking to hire a Trade Publisher to drive the growth and success of their trade books by developing innovative strategies, acquiring top-tier titles, and building strong relationships with authors, agents, and buyers.

  • Location: office or home-based with quarterly visits to the office (based in the North-West)

About you:

We are looking for someone that will bring professional curiosity, creativity, and leadership skills to the team, and who will take a leadership role in shaping the future of the trade portfolio and make a lasting impact. Key requirements for the role are:

  • Demonstrable experience in trade (and ideally and academic crossover) publishing at a senior level
  • Proven track record in creating and managing a successful list of high-quality books
  • Strategic thinking with strong commercial judgment
  • Ability to meet targets and dynamically grow a list, with clear KPI reporting
  • Deep understanding of the marketplace, trends, and business priorities.
  • Exceptional project management, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Strong relationships with authors, agents, and industry partners
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

The Role:

In this role, you will shape and execute the trade list strategy, setting and tracking KPIs while adapting and evolving the vision to identify new opportunities. You will collaborate with marketing to position the brand and key titles effectively, benchmark offerings against competitors, and maintain market awareness.

As a team leader, you will line manage an Associate Editor and oversee the commissioning pipeline, whole also ensure high standards in the book production process, deliver on time and within budget, report progress and strategy to senior management, recruit and manage freelance acquisitions staff, and occasionally deputise for the Editorial Director as needed.

Developing acquisition policies through strategic partnerships will be essential. You will be responsible for identifying and developing high-quality manuscripts for a general audience, working towards acquisition and income targets. In this role, you will also be managing author relations to ensure clear communication and expectations, collaborating with agents, authors, and international counterparts, conducting thorough structural and line editing, and working with sales, marketing, and publicity teams to develop acquisition pitch plans.

In addition, you will oversee the lifecycle of backlist titles, making decisions on reprints and reissues.
