Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to work within Neighbourhood services and in particular the Waste services section? We are looking for Waste Collection Operatives to collect all aspects of waste throughout the county borough. This will include domestic waste, trade waste, and recycling which incorporates black box collections, green waste, cardboard, and food.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

1. Carry out Waste collection services as agreed with your Supervisor and Waste Team Leader.
2. Liaise with the Waste Awareness Officer/Enforcement Officer regarding non-compliance by residents of Torfaen.
3. Contribute to raising public awareness of the twin bin scheme currently being utilised throughout Torfaen.
4. Identify and provide assistance for members of the public experiencing difficulties in separating their waste.
5. Conduct regular audits of the number of bins, bags, or boxes collected by your team, and relay this information to your Supervisor.
6. Gain an accredited professional award such as the Institute of Customer Service Communications Award Level 1. Training and advice will be offered in order to gain this award by your designated coach.
7. Work with the Education Officer, which involves school visits and road shows where you will interact with students and residents of Torfaen helping and advising on any twin bin related issues.
8. Work in a safe manner, ensuring all protective clothing is worn, including boots, gloves, and reflective waistcoats.
9. Adhere to the Council\’s Health and Safety Policy.
10. Ensure all spillages are removed and report any waste spillages immediately to your Supervisor.
11. Report additional bins, excessive extra plastic sacks, and contaminated bins to your Supervisor.
12. Be courteous and polite to members of the public at all times.
13. If access is impaired, pull out the bins, bags, and boxes and return to the collection point; all must be emptied.
14. Work with your Team Leader when they are reversing the vehicle; Banksman training will be provided.
15. Be responsible for your own Health and Safety and that of your colleagues.
16. Ensure safe working practices are followed.
17. Distribute promotional literature as required.
18. Ensure all assisted collections are carried out and waste receptacles returned to their correct positions.
19. Carry out any reasonable request by your Supervisor, which may include gritting duties during the winter period; in-house training will be provided.

Education/Qualifications/Knowledge:

1. Educated to Secondary Education level.
2. Knowledge of the Refuse/Recycling service and the aims/targets of Waste Collection within the County Borough.
3. Understanding of the legislation and statutory obligations affecting the provision and delivery of the twin Bin Refuse Collection Scheme.

Experience:

1. Previous experience in the field of Refuse/Recycling.

Skills and Abilities:

1. Effective communicator with good interpersonal skills.
2. Customer care skills when dealing with members of the public.
3. Able to deal positively and objectively with conflict.
