The role

At SSE Thermal, we’re shaping the future of low-carbon thermal and hydrogen power assets, and we need a talented Process Engineer / Human Factors Specialist to join our team!

As a Human Factors Specialist, you will be at the heart of delivering excellence in safety, health, and environmental practices. You’ll be a subject matter expert, providing critical expertise on Human Factors and its impact on the development of cutting-edge low-carbon energy projects. This role offers the opportunity to influence change, promote best practices, and ensure the highest standards across the full project lifecycle.

You will

  • Lead the development and implementation of Human Factors strategies for SSE Thermal’s low-carbon and hydrogen projects.
  • Act as a subject matter expert to deliver Project Human Factors Implementation Plans, applying engineering and design standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Chair monthly steering group meetings with senior leaders to review the Human Factors framework, update on legislation, assess risks, and discuss opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical guidance to the Thermal Asset Management and Engineering teams, supporting the application of Human Factors tools.
  • Offer essential Risk and Process Safety support, ensuring projects meet process safety requirements and conducting SHE assurance activities.

You have

  • Proven experience in Human Factors, Process Safety, SHE, and hazard study facilitation, ideally in power generation or a similar industry.
  • A degree-level qualification in process safety engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • Solid understanding of engineering best practices, relevant codes, and risk assessment techniques for process safety-critical plant.
  • Familiarity with Human Factors tools (e.g., Hierarchical Task Analysis, Human Reliability Assessments, etc.) and, ideally, professional chartered status in Ergonomics and Human Factors or a related discipline.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
