The opportunity: The Terrorism team is based in London, US and Asia accepting risks on a world-wide basis. We are leaders in a number of our chosen areas and require a commitment to technical expertise and accuracy to maintain this leadership role. A great emphasis is placed on the relationship between the insured and insurer with a focus on meeting clients and producers in their home territories. Business is written through both Markel Syndicate 3000, Markel International Insurance Company Limited and our US platform. As the Operations Manager, you’ll be an integral part of the team and our success.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Support the Director and Head of regions with developing new initiatives bringing in all stakeholders in Markel to support the projects through the Underwriting Initiative Framework process.
  • Work closely with the Director to produce structured plans on bringing new classes to the team, assisting to investigate full structures of these classes and producing documentation to present a credible plan.
  • Provide in-depth analysis to support changes in underwriting strategy or requests for more capacity, maintaining the upkeep of Formal Underwriting Strategy documentation and chairing the monthly global underwriting reviews.
  • Maintain War & Terrorism Product Line specific underwriting policies and procedures and collaborate with management, claims, actuarial and product development to institute changes when appropriate.
  • Work closely with the Heads to prepare, coordinate and execute product line specific training for underwriters and support staff.
  • Help develop and maintain efficient workflow processes for full underwriting policy lifecycle including development of augmented underwriting solutions.
  • Build reputation with our key brokers to offer your and our expertise and become a market leading team for product innovation.
  • Audit the services being provided to Markel’s War and Terrorism team by third parties to ensure complete utilisation of services and data sources.
  • Assist in the exploration and potential implementation into pricing models, digital platforms or internal dashboards of additional third party data sources.
  • Portfolio exposure analysis – work alongside with the Cat management team to improve on the MI provided to the team, senior management and reinsurers.
  • Collaborating with senior members of the team and Ceded RI to improve on the data presented to our reinsurers.
  • Produce, manage and present weekly MI to the global team.
  • Assist Director and Heads with QBR, DBR and QTR planning MI.

Our must-haves:

  • The successful candidate will have 5+ years of current insurance experience.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of proven success training, team building, mentoring and performance management of a commercial insurance underwriting required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in planning, delivering and presenting credible initiatives.
  • Broad understanding of claims, actuarial, product development, regulatory and compliance functions.
  • Understand and enjoy working in a highly matrixed environment.
  • High energy, ability to deliver exceptional written and verbal presentations, pro-active self-starter; strong sense of urgency, flexible and spontaneous.
  • Proven ability in setting and meeting objectives and impact and influencing peers and subordinates to “buy in”.
