The Warburg Institute is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of art and culture. Its collections, courses and programmes are dedicated to the study of global cultural history and the role of images in society.

The Warburg Institute owes its mission and its very existence to the open movement of people, collections and ideas. Founded in Hamburg at the turn of the twentieth century by Aby Warburg (1866-1929), the Institute was exiled to England when the Nazis came to power in 1933 and became part of the University of London in 1944. It has served, during a turbulent century, as a creative crucible for scholars, curators and artists. Building on Warburg’s belief that the memory of the past activates the present, the Warburg examines the movement of culture across barriers of time, space and discipline.

The Warburg’s unique Library, Archive and Photographic Collection form a holistic, associative engine for exploring the histories of the arts and sciences, linking the textual and the visual, the intellectual and the social, the scientific and the magical. Following an extensive renovation of the Institute’s building in Bloomsbury, new spaces for exhibitions and events have restored the Institute’s original emphasis on discovery, display and debate and are bringing its holdings and programmes to new audiences.

The School of Advanced Study (SAS) is uniquely funded to serve as a national centre of excellence in the promotion and facilitation of research in the humanities. It comprises eight internationally renowned research institutes as well as centres in Digital Humanities and Public Engagement. It has four nationally and internationally recognised specialist research libraries that sit alongside the University’s central library in Senate House.

The Role

The Warburg Institute, in the University of London’s School of Advanced Study, is now recruiting a new Deputy Director.

The post-holder will sit on the Senior Management Team and work with the Director and the Warburg’s staff to steer the Institute’s academic planning and operations. In addition to adding depth and breadth to the Warburg’s research and teaching in art- and cultural history, the Deputy Director will lead on the development of new academic programmes, institutional partnerships and externally funded projects.

The role presents a rare opportunity to join this prestigious institution at a pivotal moment in its history. Having just completed a £14.5m capital project called The Warburg Renaissance , the Institute was relaunched in October 2024 with new spaces and activities including a state-of-the-art facility for special collections, a stunning new auditorium and the Institute’s first gallery for physical and digital display. The project, some seven years in the making, has enhanced the academic resources and created new facilities for collections, exhibitions and events. The Institute is now enrolling record numbers of postgraduate students, and its new programme of exhibitions and public events is helping it to reach new audiences. Moreover, the School of Advanced Study has secured new funding to deliver an ambitious strategy of training and engagement: the Warburg will play a leading role in key initiatives, working with the other institutes in the School to promote professional, critical and creative skills across the humanities. In the coming years, finally, the University will transform Senate House and its library, making it an international beacon for interdisciplinary learning.

The salary for the successful candidate will be assigned to band (1-4) on the Professorial scale as part of the recruitment process and consideration will be given to current salary when determining remuneration.
