Job Description:

The successful candidate will participate in the Intensive Care Consultant on-call rota and ‘Hot Week system’ as well as completing regular sessions in their dual specialty. Specialty commitments may take place on any of our Trust sites. The Intensive Care Unit is based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will perform all the duties and have all responsibilities of a Consultant Intensivist. At present, all of our Intensive Care Consultants are from an Anaesthetic background, however we welcome applicants with dual training in other specialties.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC with valid license to practice
  • FFICM, EDIC or equivalent
  • CCT or eligibility within 6 months
  • Possession of / eligibility for Fellowship / Associate Fellowship of Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register
  • Dual CCT or equivalent
  • Certificate in Medical Education
  • Membership of professional societies
  • Practical experience in the management of critical care patients
  • Previous appointments that have provided professional training in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Proven experience of Audit and Quality Improvement with evidence of change
  • Understanding of management responsibilities of a Consultant
  • Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues, both medical and non-medical, and other Departments
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD
  • Skills in echocardiography
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
  • IT and computing skills
  • Attendance at appropriate management courses
  • Evidence of publications (eg. Peer Review, Book chapter, case report)
  • Practical experience in a complementary specialty
  • Higher training in regional anaesthesia or perioperative medicine
  • Practical experience in Anaesthetising and management of high-risk patients requiring general and regional anaesthesia
  • Evidence of participation in and a commitment to teaching
  • Knowledge of up-to-date literature
  • Attendance at courses on teaching, appraisal and mentorship
  • Proven interest in at least one area of research and an up to date GCP certificate
  • Evidence of recent and current research with relevant publications.
  • Able to facilitate multi-site working
