Job purpose

The Head of Tax BII has overall responsibility for the entirety of the tax function across the market. They are the subject matter expert responsible for the ongoing delivery of existing taxation services, whilst also driving the overall expansion of the BII Tax business from a strategic and commercial point of view. They are prominent leaders accountable for client delivery and practice improvements in quality and cost to service. They will be expert with a comprehensive knowledge of UK, Ireland and Channel Island Tax reporting requirement, including (but not limited to) VAT, FATCA, CRS, Income Tax, Corporate Tax and Insurance Premium Tax (IPT). Furthermore, they will have a strong awareness of both known and future developments in Tax legislation and reporting requirements and will be responsible for both analysing their relevance to TMF and its client and developing and implementing suitable workstreams to ensure continuing compliance.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and drive forward the tax strategy ensuring risks are managed and benefits are realised
  • Ensure compliance across all taxes and proactively develop controls and processes to maintain high standards
  • Cover core UK VAT/Indirect tax and corporate concepts, including VAT returns, VAT compliance, Transfer Pricing, Comparative Tax Analysis, Tax Efficiency & Optimisation
  • Oversee the IPT service offering
  • Handle enquiries from regulatory bodies or tax authorities
  • Provide specialist support to UK domiciled and non-UK domiciled individuals on a variety of tax issues

Working with client teams, the successful candidate will be accountable for overseeing the preparation and, where relevant, submission of:

  • VAT returns and maintenance of company VAT records
  • Corporation tax returns
  • Tax provisioning computations
  • Economic substance classifications and reporting
  • Trust and Estate tax returns
  • Capital gains and relevant income pools tracking for trusts
  • Other tax reporting obligations including (but not limited to) Inheritance tax returns, Construction Industry Scheme returns, UK Withholding tax returns, Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) returns, ISE Returns etc.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with external tax advisors, internal and external stakeholders
  • Developing relationships and communicating effectively with clients to provide great planning and guidance
  • Identifying, developing strategies, and reducing any tax risks with the help of auditors
  • Ensuring that all tax laws are followed by company employees
  • Managing performance of employees in accordance with TMF guidance
  • Overseeing and organising tax audits
  • Identifying ways to reduce the company’s taxes by reviewing financial statements and other records
  • Ensuring timeliness and accuracy of the submission of regulatory reports from the relevant business/operation units
  • Assisting on tax compliance for High-Net-worth individuals
  • Assisting with litigation issues related to tax
  • Attending meetings with clients to discuss potentially complex technical areas of tax or to promote the services of the Tax function
  • Working with the IPT leaders to develop strategy and grow the business

CRS / FATCA:

  • Lead, manage and develop the FATCA/CRS team in the BII
  • Provide advice to UK and offshore clients on all matters relating to FATCA and CRS
  • Provide support to other offices worldwide on FATCA and CRS related matters as they apply in Jersey and Guernsey
  • Assist the senior management team in business development including providing local and global solutions to clients, attending and presenting at seminars and the preparation of relevant articles and alerts
  • Build a global network of contacts to grow the FATCA (and possibly a wider) offering, through colleagues and contacts in the Channel Islands

Your profile

  • CTA/ACA/ACCA/CIOT Qualified
  • Transactional Tax Knowledge
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment, highly driven with the ability to conduct multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Individual contributor but willing to teach/mentor
  • Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Driven professional to ensure deadlines are met sooner rather than later
