This specialist SEN school in Bromsgrove, Birmingham supports students aged with a range of additional needs, including Autism (ASD), ADHD, conduct disorders, attachment disorders and moderate learning difficulties. The curriculum is highly personalised, focusing on academic progress, social development, emotional regulation and life skills, preparing students for further education, employment or adulthood.

The Role

As a SEN Teaching Assistant / Behaviour Mentor, you will work primarily with secondary and post-16 students (Key Stages 3-5), supporting pupils both in and out of the classroom. Many students are capable learners but require additional support to manage sensory needs, emotional regulation, behaviour and social interaction.

  • Supporting pupils with Autism, ADHD and associated learning and behavioural needs
  • Implementing strategies to support emotional regulation and positive behaviour
  • Building consistent, trusting relationships with students
  • Supporting learning on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Assisting in the delivery and adaptation of lessons
  • Supporting life skills, independence and social communication
  • Following individual education, behaviour and care plans
  • Recording progress and contributing to reviews
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff and therapists
  • Liaising with external professionals where required

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Experience working with ASD, ADHD, attachment disorders or learning difficulties
  • A good understanding of challenging behaviour and trauma-informed practice
  • Experience in a special school, SEN provision or alternative provision
  • Experience supporting secondary-aged and post-16 students
  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills
  • Team Teach, MAPA or similar training (desirable)
  • A current Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service
  • A patient, resilient and empathetic approach
