Outreach Therapeutic Education Practitioner needed in East London. Do you have a background in SEMH, SEBD or challenging behaviour? Are you looking for an exciting outreach opportunity? This specialist school based in East London is looking for an Outreach Therapeutic Education Practitioner with experience of working with challenging children and young people. This is a specialist SEN school that caters for young people including depression, ASD, ADHD, complex needs, obsessive compulsive disorder and attachment disorders.

Therapeutic Education Practitioners (TEP) are required to carry out specific direct educational work with individual pupils within the school and/or community. TEPs are responsible for developing and monitoring Individual Education, Behaviour and Integration Plans and intervention programmes with the support of the class teacher. All staff look at our pupils holistically and draw on a wide range of social care and teaching strategies to meet pupil needs. TEPs adhere to both Local Authority and Newham PRUs’ Child Protection Procedures and ensure at all times that the welfare of the pupil is paramount.

Outreach Therapeutic Education Practitioners will be working with secondary aged pupils who have severe complex needs including attachment disorder. Students are academic and they range from mild learning difficulties to gifted and talented. Outreach Therapeutic Education Practitioners are given opportunities to succeed through the use of highly personalised individual education plans to help support their students. The Therapeutic Education Department works closely with the nurses, doctors and therapists at the centre and with a wide range of professionals in the community.

Overall Purpose of Job

  • To support pupils by providing pastoral support, working closely with pupils with SEMH needs on a 1 to 1 and group basis both in and out of the classroom, and working with parents and carers, and outside agencies.
  • To deliver high quality and structured therapeutic learning support which contributes to improved attendance, engagement in learning, academic progress and emotional well-being of young people at the PRU. This will include before and after school activities, targeted interventions, and family liaison.
  • To create and monitor Individual Education, Behaviour and Integration Plans and intervention programmes from point of admission to reintegration or progression, in line with the assess, plan, do, review cycle.
  • Provide teacher cover for lessons in the absence of teaching staff during any periods of short term teacher absence.
  • Support with the delivery of schemes of work, contributing to differentiation and preparation of class and individual resources.
  • To work together with colleagues and the wider school community to develop and implement a key area of therapeutic and targeted intervention across Newham PRUs.
  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to address the individual needs of pupils and their families and help overcome barriers to learning and achieving their full potential, both within and outside of the school.
  • To contribute to developing, implementing and monitoring transition plans for pupils, considering relevant pathways (reintegration to mainstream education, progression to post 16 education or training).
  • To support the development and implementation of a parental engagement programme across the school to ensure parents and carers are involved in school life and provided opportunities to access additional support and information regarding their child’s education.
  • To support the safe daily operational running of the schools, including carrying out daily searches and duty sessions.
