Job Purpose: Seeking an Orthopedic Physician Assistant for the Orthopedics Department at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, VA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain familiarity with the Military Treatment Facility formulary and prescribe medications in accordance with approved listings.
- Provide comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment for conditions such as contusions, strains, sprains, sports injuries, back and neck pain, neuromuscular and demyelinating disorders, rheumatic and collagen diseases, peripheral nervous system and myoneural junction disorders, and chronic pain.
- Deliver non-surgical musculoskeletal care including rehabilitation programs, conditioning, functional capacity testing, and ongoing management of chronic conditions.
- Support orthopedic surgery by performing pre-admission evaluations, physical assessments, instrumentation and surgical setup, patient positioning and preparation, and first or second assist duties (including retraction, suturing, and closure).
- Manage postoperative care, including dressing, splint, and cast changes, wound care, suture removal, and documentation of postoperative progress.
- Conduct daily rounds, review labs and radiologic studies, write progress notes and routine orders, and initiate admissions, transfers, and discharges subject to physician review.
- Dictate clinical notes and discharge summaries as required.
- Participate in operational responsibilities such as carrying the departmental duty pager on a rotational basis, responding to ER/clinic/fleet calls for musculoskeletal cases, and reviewing consults through electronic referral systems.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years full time experience within the preceding three years as an Orthopedic Physician Assistant.
Education:
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistants.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted Physician Assistant license in any U.S. state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Basic Life Support required.
