  • Support the team with sample logging and safe handling procedures.
  • Help with preparing solutions and materials for use in lab tests.
  • Carry out basic housekeeping tasks to keep the lab clean and well‑stocked.
  • Help monitor equipment and report any issues to senior staff.
  • Follow safety rules carefully, especially when working with hazardous materials.

You will receive full training and ongoing support to help you develop technical skills and confidence in a busy, safety‑focused lab environment. This is a great opportunity to start a career in science while contributing to important environmental and energy work.

What could the future look like?

You’ll gain hands‑on experience that can lead to careers in industries such as environmental protection, nuclear clean‑up, energy, and laboratory science. There’s a growing need for skilled professionals who can safely handle, test, and analyse materials, and this apprenticeship will help you develop those valuable skills.

This apprenticeship programme also serves as a stepping‑stone towards a rewarding career in chemical and radiochemical analysis, with the added opportunity for the apprentice to become a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech), recognised by the Science Council.

This apprenticeship can also help pave the way for further educational and professional advancement, such as our Level 6 Applied Chemistry Degree Apprenticeship, enabling you to take on more specialised roles or progress into leadership positions.

About you

We’re looking for a motivated and curious individual who’s ready to start a hands‑on career in science. You should have a keen interest in chemistry and laboratory work, and a desire to grow your skills while contributing to real‑world projects that support environmental safety and the nuclear industry.

You enjoy practical work, pay close attention to detail, and can stay focused even when working to tight deadlines. You’re someone who can manage tasks independently, but also knows the value of being part of a multi‑disciplinary team. You communicate clearly, ask questions when needed, and are always looking to learn.

You’ll need to be comfortable working in a highly regulated environment and understand the importance of quality, safety, and confidentiality. A basic knowledge of QA/QC (quality assurance/quality control) is helpful, but full training will be provided.

Please note: Due to the nature of the role, candidates must be aged 18 or over and will need to undergo BPSS security clearance.

Experience

We value attitude, curiosity, and commitment just as much as past experience. While previous lab experience is an advantage, it’s not essential — we’re open to applicants from all backgrounds, especially those with a strong interest in science and the motivation to build a career as a technician in the nuclear sector.

You may be a school or college leaver, or someone looking to retrain. Either way, if you’re enthusiastic, proactive, and ready to learn, you’ll fit right in.

Qualifications

Formal qualifications aren’t essential for this role. What matters most is your genuine interest in chemistry and laboratory work, a practical mindset, good communication skills, and a strong willingness to learn and grow within a technical role at Amentum.

So how does the apprenticeship work?

At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 18 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Amentum who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career. Being an apprentice is hands‑on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.

The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme!

Eligibility

While we never want to hinder your job application process with obstacles, there are some minimum requirements you’ll need to meet in order to do an apprenticeship, these are rules set by the UK Government.

As a training provider, we are committed to ensuring that our apprenticeship programs deliver significant new knowledge and skills. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate that the program will provide learning and experiences beyond their current qualifications and professional expertise.

If you already hold a Level 3, degree or equivalent higher‑level qualification in a closely related field, or possess substantial relevant experience, you may not be eligible for apprenticeship funding, as these programmes are designed for individuals who require upskilling or reskilling in their chosen career pathway.

You’ll need to be over 18, not in full time education, have lived in the UK for 3 years and have the right to work in the UK.

If you don’t quite meet these minimum requirements yet, let us know you’re interested here and we’ll get in touch to discuss this further with you.
