Key Responsibilities

As an Apprentice Materials Technician you will work in a laboratory environment, testing materials such as concrete, aggregates and asphalt, while supporting team members and maintaining lab accreditation. Your role involves both on‑site and lab work, ensuring materials are safe, reliable and fit for long‑term use.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working alongside team members to test the properties of construction materials.
  • Improving existing products to eliminate faults.
  • Adopting new technologies, such as automated processes and ergonomic equipment.
  • Developing knowledge of approaches used to examine materials, including non‑destructive testing (NDT).
  • Following testing methods to ensure safety and quality, supporting lab accreditation.
  • Traveling to and from sites to collect materials for testing.

About You

You enjoy working outdoors and on real‑world projects, travel between sites and value hands‑on work. You are practical, reliable, detail‑focused and pride yourself on accurate procedure and data recording. Safety and quality matter to you, and you can meet deadlines without cutting corners. You learn best by doing, are confident with basic maths and data recording, remain calm around machinery and fast‑paced environments, and can work independently once trained while communicating clearly with site teams. You are motivated to contribute to tangible projects and build a long‑term career in the construction or materials testing industry.

Note: Applicants must be 21 or over, hold a full UK manual driving licence, and must meet other eligibility criteria listed below.

Apprenticeship Eligibility

  • Be 16 or over.
  • Not be in full‑time education.
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
  • Have the right to work in the UK.
  • Applicants should not already hold a Level 3, degree or higher qualification in a closely related subject, or have significant experience in the same field.

Apprenticeship Details

Over 20 months, you will combine day‑to‑day experience in the workplace with structured training delivered by experts at Tiro. This blended learning approach includes online sessions, in‑person training and hands‑on support, with guidance from a dedicated mentor. You’ll spend at least 6 hours per week on off‑the‑job training, including virtual learning, practical activities and applied assignments.
