Role Summary

We are recruiting for a Technical Sales Director : Industrial Automation to lead sales growth across technical industrial markets, with a focus on motion control, power transmission, automation, machinery upgrades and engineered solutions. This is a senior leadership role suited to someone with a strong technical sales background who can develop commercial strategy, build key customer relationships and identify growth opportunities across OEMs, machine builders, manufacturing businesses and industrial end users. The successful candidate will be technically credible, commercially driven and capable of leading strategic sales activity within a specialist engineering environment.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Lead business development and sales growth across industrial automation, power transmission, motion control and engineered solutions.
  • Develop and deliver the sales strategy across key accounts, target customers and new market opportunities.
  • Build senior-level relationships with OEMs, machine builders, manufacturing customers and industrial end users.
  • Identify opportunities for machinery upgrades, automation improvements, component supply, retrofit projects and technical solutions.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to shape customer‑specific solutions that are technically and commercially viable.
  • Support key customer visits, technical presentations, commercial negotiations and strategic account development.
  • Own sales forecasting, pipeline management, margin performance and commercial planning.
  • Provide leadership, direction and support to the wider sales function.
  • Identify market trends, customer needs and new opportunities to support long‑term business growth.

Key Skills And Experience

The Technical Sales Director : Industrial Automation will need a proven background in senior technical sales, business development, sales management or commercial leadership within an engineering, manufacturing or industrial automation environment.

  • Strong experience selling technical products, engineered solutions, automation systems, machinery upgrades or industrial components.
  • Technical understanding of areas such as motors, drives, gearboxes, geared motors, brakes, clutches, linear motion, sensors, safety products, web handling or tension control.
  • Proven ability to develop sales strategy, grow revenue and manage commercially important customer relationships.
  • Confident engaging with senior stakeholders, engineering teams, maintenance teams, production leaders and procurement contacts.
  • Strong commercial awareness across pricing, margin, forecasting, pipeline management and account development.
  • Able to understand customer applications and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, safety or efficiency.
  • Experience selling into manufacturing, automation, machinery, converting, packaging, printing or wider industrial markets would be advantageous.
  • Previous sales leadership or team management experience would be highly beneficial.
