Location: Ledbury, Herefordshire

Hours: Part-time, 15 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Contract: Fixed Term (Academic Year September 2025 – July 2026)

Pay Rate: GBP 30 per hour

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Specialist SEND Tutor to provide 1:1 support for a cheeky, happy, and loving young child who has a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on a child’s early development. The role focuses on delivering engaging, community-based activities each morning before supporting his transition to primary school. Your primary goal will be to foster the development of communication, social interaction, and play skills to help prepare the child for his next educational setting.

Following each three-hour session, you will be responsible for walking the child to their local primary school, which is approximately a ten-minute walk from their home.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging 1:1 support for three hours each morning, focusing on play-based and sensory learning activities.
  • Utilise the child’s interests, such as being outdoors, playing with balls, vehicle play, building towers, music, and bubbles, to facilitate learning and engagement.
  • Implement a total communication approach, using visual supports (like Now and Next boards), objects of reference, signs, and symbols to aid the child’s understanding and expression.
  • Support the child in managing transitions and regulating their emotions, as they can become frustrated when unable to communicate their needs.
  • Model and encourage the development of crucial social skills, such as turn-taking, sharing, and joint attention.
  • Provide a high level of supervision to ensure the child remains safe, as they have a limited concept of danger.
  • Attend termly review meetings to discuss the child’s progress.

Essential Requirements

  • Must have proven UK experience working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEND), specifically with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • A sound understanding of sensory processing needs and the ability to facilitate sensory play.
  • Experience in using a range of communication strategies, including visual aids and being attentive to non-verbal cues.
  • A patient, calm, and resilient approach to supporting a child who can display challenging behaviour when dysregulated.
  • Must be able to work in Ledbury from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, five days a week, and walk the child to school afterwards.

Highly Desirable

  • A current DBS on the Update Service.
  • Experience with specific interventions such as Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, or Sensory Circuits.
  • Knowledge of emotional support strategies like Emotion Coaching or Zones of Regulation.

If you are a compassionate and skilled professional passionate about supporting children with SEND to thrive, we would love to hear from you. Apply
