The Role of Principal Highways and Drainage Engineer
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of highways and drainage schemes for residential, commercial, and mixed‐use developments. You will collaborate with internal disciplines and external stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and to the highest technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of highways and drainage infrastructure projects from concept through to construction.
- Oversee the preparation of highways designs (S38 / S278) and drainage strategies (SuDS, S104).
- Manage project teams, providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
- Liaise with local authorities, clients, and other stakeholders to secure approvals and deliver successful outcomes.
- Review and approve technical designs, reports, and drawings.
- Support project management activities including programme, budget, and resource planning.
- Contribute to business development, client relationships, and project bids.
About You
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered or working towards chartership (ICE or similar).
- Significant experience in highways and drainage design for development infrastructure.
- Strong knowledge of UK design standards, S38, S278, S104, and SuDS.
- Experience using industry software such as Civil 3D, MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, or similar.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
