Overview: Gloucester (hybrid). To c GBP50k + GBP6k car allowance.

Responsibilities

  • Policy and System Management: developing, implementing and reviewing comprehensive HSE policies, procedures, and SSOW allied to the automotive trade environment (e.g., working with vehicle lifts, handling hazardous substances, managing fire safety in workshops etc), whilst maintaining and improving the H and S Management System, ensuring it meets applicable standards including ISO 45001 (where applicable) and ensuring continuous improvement activities are maintained.
  • Compliance and Auditing: ensuring the business adheres to all relevant UK legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated regulations (e.g., LOLER, PUWER, COSHH, DSEAR), undertaking regular internal audits, inspections, and site safety checks across all locations and both managing and coordinating external H and S audits and regulatory visits (e.g., HSE inspectors).
  • Risk Management: undertaking and reviewing risk assessments for all activities, equipment, and processes, particularly in high-risk areas like vehicle maintenance bays and paint spray booths and implementing effective control measures to mitigate any identified risks.
  • Incident Management: leading where required the investigation of all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, ensuring thorough RCA, and managing RIDDOR reporting where legally required, as well as developing and implementing preventative actions to avoid recurrence.
  • Training and Culture: developing and delivering H and S training and championing the positive and proactive safety culture.
  • Environmental: managing environmental compliance, including the safe storage and disposal of waste oils, chemicals, and scrap materials in line with UK regulations (e.g., Environmental Protection Act 1990).

It is envisaged the successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. With strong analytical and report writing abilities as well as proficiency in the MS suite of packages, you will ensure full compliance with UK H and S legislation and drive a strong safety culture, whilst minimising risk associated with all aspects of the auto trade, including workshops, showrooms, parts departments, and customer areas.

Realistically qualified with a recognised Health and Safety qualification, such as a NEBOSH National General Certificate, and able to attend the Gloucester site as required, you will demonstrate proven previous success in a dedicated Health and Safety Manager role, preferably within an automotive, engineering, manufacturing, or similar high-risk technical environment, with specific knowledge of safety relating to Work Place Transport Regulations, vehicle repair, lifting equipment (LOLER), and hazardous substances (COSHH) being essential.
