Salary: GBP 34,988.05 per annum

Within Care and Rehabilitation Services, the philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to reintegrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and causes of prison stress are minimised. Central to our philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. Our training and operational practices emphasise the need to treat prisoners with dignity and respect and staff build positive and supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care.

HMP Oakwood is one of the largest prisons in England and Wales, providing places for up to approximately 2100 Category C male prisoners.

We now have an opportunity for a Fire, Health, Environmental and Fire First Line Manager to join our team at HMP Oakwood. The successful candidate will provide professional competent advice, guidance and support to all staff on matters to do with the health and safety of the establishment/area and all equipment and facilities within it.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Health, Safety, Environment and Fire Advisor of the area/site, and act as deputy in their absence.
  • Advise the senior management team on the implementation of company health and safety, and fire prevention policy, and other relevant legislation to ensure that the business unit/area is operated in a safe manner.
  • Undertake, plan and monitor inspections, risk assessments and audits ensuring they are carried out for all areas of the business unit/area, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of employees, those in our care and others working or present within the business establishment/area.
  • Investigate and report on all accidents, lost time incidents, RIDDORs and near misses including HPIs, ensuring that lessons learned are acted upon, and that the risk of re‑occurrence are minimised.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and delivery of Health, Safety, Fire and Environmental staff training programmes, to raise staff awareness of their responsibilities in respect of Health, Safety, and Fire and Environmental practice.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and external agencies to ensure best practice and effective coordination and cooperation on Health, Safety, Fire and Environmental issues.
  • Monitor the environment on a daily basis, ensuring that appropriate health and safety and fire procedures are appropriate and consistently applied.
  • Act in accordance with security and operational instructions at all times to ensure the maintenance of security within the secure environment (as required by secure establishments).
  • Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health and Safety culture across the site, leading by example; this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner and following the applicable safe systems of work for the role.

Essential Skills
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification.
  • NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent, or will be working towards it.
