The Marketing Manager is responsible for developing and delivering strategic marketing activity that supports commercial growth, customer retention, market positioning and business decision-making.
The role is focused on market strategy rather than day-to-day communications. It will provide commercial insight, customer and competitor analysis, market intelligence, product positioning and campaign direction to support sales growth and business performance.
The postholder will work closely with commercial and technical teams to understand customer needs, identify market opportunities, support product and sector strategies, and help position the business effectively in existing and target markets.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver marketing strategies that support the commercial objectives of the business.
- Provide market intelligence, competitor analysis and customer insight to inform commercial decision-making.
- Identify market trends, growth opportunities, customer needs and sector developments relevant to the business.
- Support the development of customer segmentation, value propositions and route-to-market strategies.
- Work with Sales, Technical Service and Product teams to support product positioning, customer targeting and commercial planning.
- Analyse market, customer and sales data to identify opportunities for growth, retention and margin improvement.
- Support new product, application or market development activity by providing commercial marketing insight and positioning.
- Develop and maintain a clear understanding of target sectors, customer groups, product applications and competitor activity.
- Contribute to pricing, product mix, customer strategy and sales planning discussions through evidence-based marketing insight.
- Support the preparation of strategic marketing plans, business cases, presentations and commercial reports.
- Work with internal stakeholders to ensure marketing strategy is aligned with business objectives, customer requirements and commercial priorities.
- Provide strategic direction for external communications, campaigns, events or promotional activity where required, ensuring activity is commercially focused and aligned to market objectives.
- Manage external marketing agencies or service providers where required, ensuring outputs support strategic and commercial goals.
- Track and report on marketing activity, market performance and commercial impact, using data and insight to recommend improvements.
- Support continuous improvement in marketing processes, market intelligence, customer insight and commercial planning.
Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a marketing, commercial marketing, product marketing, market development or strategic marketing role.
- Relevant marketing, business or commercial qualification, such as a degree in Business, Marketing, Commercial Management or a related discipline, or a CIM qualification such as a CIM Diploma.
- Experience working in a commercial, B2B, manufacturing, industrial, chemical, materials, technical or product-led environment.
- Strong understanding of strategic marketing principles, including market segmentation, positioning, value proposition development and customer insight.
- Experience using market intelligence, competitor analysis and customer data to support commercial decision-making.
- Ability to analyse complex information and convert it into clear commercial insight and practical recommendations.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with Sales, Technical, Product, Finance and senior commercial teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports, presentations and business cases.
- Commercially focused, with a strong understanding of how marketing activity supports sales, margin, customer retention and business growth.
- Good project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver to deadlines.
- Confident working independently while maintaining alignment with wider business priorities.
- Experience in the chemical, pigments, coatings, plastics, manufacturing or process industry.
- Experience supporting international markets, distributors or global customer groups.
- Experience in product marketing, technical marketing or application-led marketing.
- Experience developing market entry strategies, sector strategies or customer growth plans.
- Experience working with CRM, market intelligence tools, sales data or business intelligence platforms.
- Experience supporting pricing, product lifecycle, customer profitability or margin improvement activity.
- Experience managing external agencies, research partners or marketing service providers.
- CIM Chartered Marketer status or working towards Chartered Marketer status.
