TimeOutdoors exists to help more people get active outdoors.

For more than 20 years we've connected people with events, challenges, charity places and adventures.Nobody here is marketing widgets. You'll be marketing the things people daydream about - a first 10K, a challenge to take on with friends, a charity place in the Great North Run or an adventure further afield.

Alongside our community, we work with charities, event organisers and adventure providers - including some of the biggest and most recognisable brands in the sector - helping them reach the right people and turn interest into participation.

There is already a lot happening at TimeOutdoors. We have the platform, the audience, the partners and stories of people getting outside and doing something that matters to them. And we've just launched a service that removes the upfront cost for advertisers to work with us so we're looking to scale up fast.

We're a small, close-knit team based in Yorkshire, punching well above our weight and this is a newly created role at the heart of that growth.

The role

We're looking for our Marketing Manager. You won't be starting from scratch: there's a clear strategy, a 20-year-old brand, thousands of events and a business that's scaling fast. But neither will you be handed a finished plan and asked to simply run it. After getting to know the business, you'll work closely with the Founder to refine and develop that strategy - and you'll own turning it into measurable results: sign-ups, conversion and advertiser outcomes.

You'll sit at the intersection of content, community and conversion, with a single clear mandate: turn visitors into sign-ups and our advertisers into long-term commercial partners.SEO is not the heart of this role as organic strategy sits with the Founder.

You'll be working with AI, not against it. We already use AI across the business - our listings tool drafts content at scale, and our AI marketing assistant handles analysis and first drafts. We want a Marketing Manager who's already using AI tools in their own work - to draft faster, test more ideas, interrogate data, produce more - and who knows exactly where human judgement still matters. If you're not fully there yet but are genuinely curious and quick to adopt, that works too. What doesn't work is reluctance.

Storytelling is also central to the role. We believe real people doing real things outdoors are one of our strongest marketing assets. But great content alone is not enough - you'll be judged on outcomes: sign-ups, conversion rate and advertiser results, not on activity or output volume.

You'll have the freedom to test ideas and challenge how we currently do things. In a small business, what you put into the role has a very visible impact on what comes out of it.

What success looks like

  • Visitor-to-sign-up conversion rate improves measurably across key listings and landing pages.
  • Transactional revenue grows as more advertisers are onboarded via our Conversions API.
  • More advertisers move to self-service via MyTOD, reducing manual overhead per advertiser.
  • The website becomes a thriving community platform that also delivers demonstrable value to advertisers and partners.

In your first month, we'll agree targets together and you'll be measured on those - not on output volume.

What you'll do

  • Refine and develop the marketing and growth strategy with the Founder.
  • Own the end-to-end visitor journey - from first visit, to shortlist, to sign-up.
  • Set and track conversion KPIs for listings and landing pages, working with our Website Copywriter.
  • Use data and audience insight to understand what's converting, what isn't and where we should focus next.
  • Own our social channels - Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and beyond - and create and manage our email newsletter.
  • Find and tell the stories of our community through social, email, editorial and video.
  • Grow registrations, participation and engagement across the platform.
  • Take handover of advertisers signed up by the Founder, getting their listings live and converting quickly.
  • Build content targeting people looking for charity places, to grow transactional revenue from charity events.
  • Drive advertiser adoption of self-service tools within MyTOD, reducing the need for manual account management.
  • Produce social proof content - testimonials, stats, case studies - that strengthen our proposition to new and existing advertisers.
  • Develop the TimeOutdoors brand, voice and story with the Founder.
  • Work with the wider team so marketing, listings, partnerships and platform development pull in the same direction.
  • As the team grows, you'll help shape it and lead the people in it.

Requirements

We know the skills this role needs - driving sign-ups through content, community and campaign work - exist well beyond commercial marketing. Charity events, community and fundraising professionals do this every day: growing participant numbers, motivating supporters to take part, and proving the value of an activity to a partner. If that's your background, we want to hear from you.

You don't need to have worked in the outdoor sector, and you don't need to have followed one particular career path. You might come from commercial marketing, digital, events, charity fundraising, participation, membership or another environment where you've been responsible for turning interest into measurable action. The outdoor sector context is very learnable; the instinct for turning interest into action isn't.

What matters is that you know what good marketing looks like and can demonstrate the difference your work has made - achievements, not simply campaigns you've worked on. That might include increasing registrations or participation, improving conversion rates, growing revenue, building an audience or community, improving customer journeys, launching new propositions or improving return on marketing investment.

You'll come in with ideas, but be equally comfortable listening, understanding what already exists and deciding what should happen next. And you'll need to be comfortable challenging us - we don't expect the Marketing Manager to simply agree with everything we're already doing.

Must have

  • A track record of growing sign-ups, registrations or participant numbers through content, campaigns or supporter and community engagement - whether commercial conversion work or charity events and fundraising recruitment. What matters is the outcome: turning interest into action, not just raising awareness.
  • Already using AI tools in your day-to-day work - drafting, data analysis, content or campaign production - and comfortable directing and improving AI output rather than resisting it.
  • Confident using data to diagnose what's working in a sign-up or participant journey, and to prioritise action.
  • Proven experience across content, social media and community engagement, ideally in sport, fitness, outdoor, lifestyle, travel, events or charity fundraising.
  • A strong, versatile writer who can adapt tone across formats - short-form social, long-form editorial, email newsletters, and landing page or campaign copy that converts.
  • Commercially minded - content and community exist to grow the business, and you're comfortable being measured on revenue and conversion outcomes.
  • Proactive, with a high level of personal ownership - you spot what needs doing and get on with it.
  • Some experience leading, mentoring or closely directing other people's work.
  • Organised and self-motivated, comfortable managing your own workload and priorities in a small business where things move fast.
  • Able to co-work with the team in Yorkshire a minimum of two days a week; the remainder of the role is remote.
  • A genuine passion for getting active outdoors - you live it yourself.
  • Experience in a marketplace, aggregator or two-sided platform business (balancing advertiser and partner needs with consumer experience), or the charity equivalent.
  • Experience building AI-assisted marketing workflows - prompting, automation, or working alongside an AI assistant.
  • Experience with commission-based, performance or affiliate marketing models, or income-target-driven fundraising campaigns.
  • Working knowledge of SEO and content strategy.
  • Experience with CRO tools and methods - A/B testing, heatmaps, funnel analysis - or supporter-journey optimisation from a fundraising or membership context.
  • Familiarity with self-service onboarding flows, or experience helping advertisers self-serve rather than requiring manual account management.
  • Basic video or photography skills - enough to produce authentic, on-the-ground content.
  • Familiarity with CRM or email platforms such as Mailchimp, HubSpot, Dynamics or fundraising-specific CRMs.
  • Β£35,000-Β£42,000 starting salary depending on experience
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays
  • Subsidised entry fees for events on the platform
  • Monthly team lunches and quarterly away days
  • A collaborative, values-driven team that's genuinely passionate about what we do

We know Marketing Manager roles can look very different from one organisation to another. We've set the starting salary based on where the business and role are today, but we don't see that as the ceiling. Part of this role is demonstrating the value marketing can create for TimeOutdoors - as the business grows, the role, responsibilities and remuneration should grow with it.

How we work

TimeOutdoors is a small business, which means this role has access and influence that would be unusual in a larger organisation. You'll work directly with the Founder and be involved in conversations about the wider direction of the business, not simply marketing activity.

We're a hybrid team that values face time. The energy and creativity that comes from working together in person is central to how we operate, especially while we're growing - so you'll spend a minimum of two days a week co-working with the team in Yorkshire, with the remainder worked remotely.

Where this role can take you

This is a newly created role at a business that's scaling fast. As TimeOutdoors grows, this position is the natural route into a Head of Marketing role - owning an even bigger share of the business's growth strategy as the team and platform expand.
