We are looking for a Junior Sound Assistant to work on and off-site across all aspects of the sound department, managing and supporting the large quantity of sound equipment used both on OB operations and at our Ealing Broadcast Centre.
We are committed to investing in the long-term development of our staff.
You will work alongside experienced Sound Engineers on some of the biggest events in sport and entertainment, gaining hands‑on experience.
As part of this role, we will provide
- A structured mentoring relationship with a senior Sound Engineer for the duration.
- Access to training courses covering audio consoles and systems, microphone technique, RF/radio mic systems and intercom systems.
- Regular, scheduled progression reviews.
- Support toward relevant industry qualifications and certifications where they align with your development plan.
Main Duties
- Ensure equipment is checked, prepared, and loaded for upcoming jobs.
- Ensure equipment is stored correctly once a job is completed and follow up on any faults or issues.
- Assist with sound operations on site (for example: placing and cabling microphones, wiring up talent, setting up radio mic systems, plugging in talkback equipment).
- Work under the support of our Sound Guarantee Engineers to understand technical requirements and help with preparation for upcoming projects.
- Act as the person responsible for keeping equipment trucks (tenders) tidy, and ensure all sound equipment is back on the truck at the end of each job.
- Develop skills and knowledge within the broadcast industry, keep abreast of technological advancements, and undertake training in areas where further knowledge is required.
- Carry out troubleshooting and repairs on equipment, in base and in the field.
- Good knowledge of, and interest in, sound equipment and the latest sound technology.
- A general knowledge of broadcast engineering areas including audio, cameras, intercom, file-based media systems, networking, and RF technologies.
- Knowledge of the different types of microphones used within the broadcast industry.
- Basic knowledge of intercom and audio consoles is desirable but not essential.
- Ability to solder and use a range of hand tools to repair cables and electronic equipment (training will be provided).
- Computer literacy on both Windows and Mac platforms.
- A methodical approach to fault-finding and logical problem-solving.
- Self-motivated, able to establish effective working relationships, and willing to assist others.
- A flexible approach to the job, adapting to last-minute changes in operational requirements.
- An awareness of the need to gain and retain client confidence to ensure an ongoing business relationship.
- Commitment to working within all Timeline policies, working practices, and Health and Safety guidelines.
- Willingness to work away from home for extended periods and travel extensively.
- Previous experience in an operational role in TV or live events is desirable.
- A full driving licence is required.
