Overall Purpose of the Role

The treasurer oversees the charity’s financial affairs, ensuring they are conducted legally, responsibly, and in line with the charity’s aims. The role provides financial leadership to the board and supports good governance, transparency, and long‑term sustainability.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Financial Oversight - Monitor the charity's financial position at the trustee meetings and advise on banking arrangements.
  • Budgeting and planning - Review the annual budget and financial plans with the Board and Charity Manager.
  • Board Reporting - Challenge the financial reports prepared by the Charity Manager at trustee meetings, highlighting risks and decisions required.
  • Annual Accounts - Advise the Charity Manager as needed in the preparation of year-end accounts.
  • Policies and Controls - Ensure appropriate controls over payments, receipts and financial procedures.
  • Regulatory Compliance - Ensure Charity Manager has timely submission of annual returns, accounts and statutory filings to the Charity Commission.
  • Support Fundraising and Sustainability - Provide financial insight to funding bids, grant reporting, and long‑term planning.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in finance, accounting or financial management (professional qualifications preferred but not essential).
  • Ability to interpret financial information and communicate it clearly to the Board of Trustees.
  • Understanding of charity finance or willingness to learn (e.g. restricted funds, Gift Aid, reserves).
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Integrity, sound judgement and commitment to charity's mission.
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sympathetically to a wide variety of individuals.
  • Able to produce concise and engaging reports for a range of audiences.

Time Commitment

  • Attendance at Board meetings (typically 4 - 6 per year).
  • Ad hoc time (1-2 hours a month) for financial oversight, budgeting and year-end.
  • Occasional availability for advice between meetings.
