Techy Tea CIC

At a Techy Tea CIC drop-in event, a tech expert plays a transformative and empowering role, helping community members—often older adults or individuals with limited experience in technology—navigate the digital world with newfound confidence. By creating an accessible and friendly learning environment, tech experts enable attendees to embrace technology at their own pace.

One of the most valuable aspects of the tech expert’s work is promoting digital literacy, equipping attendees with skills that foster independence. Through approachable, one-on-one tutorials on essential skills such as email, internet searches, and social media, the tech expert makes complex concepts simple and manageable.

Yet the role goes beyond teaching skills; it’s about fostering a deep sense of digital confidence. Tech experts work hard to create a welcoming, non-judgemental space where everyone can ask questions freely and explore new features.

Accessibility is another cornerstone of the tech expert’s role. Tech experts are dedicated to helping all individuals make the most of their devices, regardless of ability.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Assist attendees with setting up their personal devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops.
• Provide guidance on device basics, including connecting to Wi-Fi, adjusting settings, and organising apps.
• Diagnose and resolve common technical issues on the spot, such as software updates, connectivity issues, and device malfunctions.
• Address questions or concerns attendees may have about their devices, applications, or software functions.
• Offer tutorials on digital basics, such as sending emails, conducting internet searches, and using social media.
• Guide attendees in using popular applications, including messaging apps (e.g., WhatsApp), video calls (e.g., Zoom), and online shopping platforms.
• Teach best practices for online safety, such as recognising phishing scams, creating strong passwords, and browsing securely.
• Create a welcoming, non-judgemental environment where attendees feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new digital skills.
• Encourage attendees to develop problem-solving skills, showing them how to use online resources, consult device manuals, and practice troubleshooting independently.
• Assist attendees in customising device settings to meet individual needs, such as adjusting font size, brightness, and accessibility features.
• Introduce useful accessibility apps for individuals with visual or auditory needs, enhancing device usability for everyone.
• Provide a warm, friendly presence to make attendees feel welcome, building trust and rapport with each person.
• Collaborate with other team members or volunteers to set up the event space and ensure a smooth, organised session.
• Monitor attendee satisfaction and provide feedback to improve future sessions.
