Volunteering Opportunity: Refugee Council - Hull & East Yorkshire
We are looking for a volunteer to support our Digital IT Drop In! The group is held every Friday 10am - 11:30am in the Hull city centre area. The volunteer will support our Digital IT Drop In as part of our Hull Employment Service. This group supports clients to learn more about how to use their digital device.
The volunteer will prepare and deliver a simple schedule of topics, such as how to send an email or download a document. The first part of the session will be used to deliver a topic, and the last half an hour will be a drop-in session so clients can ask for digital help. The volunteer will answer generic digital questions from clients and show them how to do things, if appropriate, but advocate for clients to do things themselves. Volunteers may also be asked to support one-off Refugee Council or partner events.
The volunteer will work under the supervision of the Hull Employment Advisor whilst at the group, but may work alone at times, and will have the ongoing support of the Volunteer Coordinator. You may be a Community Group Volunteer on a regular basis or ad hoc, depending on your availability.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Prepare a simple schedule of digital topics (e.g., how to send an email or download a document). Volunteers will be able to use an office computer or laptop to prepare this.
- Set up or set down the group or event (furniture or refreshments).
- Deliver the schedule of digital topics on a projector to the group.
- Answer generic digital questions from clients and show them how to do things, if appropriate, while advocating for clients to do things themselves.
- Take a register of attendees during the group and pass it to the Employment Advisor.
- Work with interpreters during the group to effectively communicate with clients if needed.
- Encourage clients to practice their English and improve their independence.
- Give a weekly reminder that clients should not share their passwords, credit or debit card details, or personal information with volunteers or staff.
