Are you an experienced data engineering leader looking for the opportunity to shape a global data platform, build a growing team and remain close to the technology? This is a high-impact role within a complex, international and purpose-led organisation. You will lead the evolution from a fragmented data landscape to a scalable, integrated enterprise platform, taking ownership of both the strategic direction and its practical delivery.
You will inherit a team of six, with budget agreed to grow this to ten during the next financial year. This gives you the opportunity to develop the existing capability, influence future hires and create a support model that can operate effectively across APAC, EMEA and the Americas.
What’s in it for you?
- Genuine ownership of a significant global data platform transformation
- The autonomy to shape the roadmap, technical direction and operating model
- An established team of six, with investment to expand
- The opportunity to develop, mentor and improve a distributed data engineering capability
- A senior role that combines leadership with meaningful technical influence
- Scope to define how the platform is supported across international time zones
- The authority to act as the ultimate point of technical escalation
- Exposure to a modern Microsoft data environment, including Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Azure SQL and Python
- The chance to improve data pipelines, medallion architecture, governance, quality and engineering practices
- Significant visibility across technology leadership, architecture, product teams and business stakeholders
- The opportunity to apply your expertise within an organisation whose work has a meaningful global impact
What will you be responsible for?
You will own the transition from legacy data services to a modern, integrated enterprise data platform. This will include turning the wider transformation into clear and deliverable workstreams across migration, integration, governance, analytics and the retirement of legacy systems.
You will lead the data engineering team responsible for both current and future services, creating the right structure, skills and culture to support a global organisation. As the senior technical authority, you will provide guidance on complex issues and act as the final point of escalation.
You will also define and improve the service wrapper around the platform, including support coverage, resilience, recoverability, escalation routes and operational ownership across APAC, EMEA and the Americas.
Working with technical and non-technical stakeholders, you will ensure that the platform continues to meet business needs while improving data quality, lineage and governance. Your remit will also include strengthening engineering practices through version control, branching strategies, pull requests, repository management and CI/CD processes governing promotion from development through to production.
What are we looking for?
You will be an experienced data engineering or data platform leader who can move comfortably between strategy, people leadership and technical delivery. You should be able to demonstrate:
- A successful track record of leading, mentoring and developing data engineering teams
- Experience building or improving support for global, business-critical data services
- The ability to engage and influence a diverse range of technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong experience across Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Azure SQL and Python
- A good understanding of data pipelines, medallion architecture and modern data platform design
- Knowledge of data management, lineage, governance and quality-control approaches
- Experience of data platform transformation, migration and legacy-system retirement
- Strong knowledge of version control, CI/CD and environment promotion
- The credibility to act as a senior technical authority and escalation point
- The ability to lead cultural and operational change within a complex organisation
This is an opportunity to do more than manage an existing platform. You will have the mandate, investment and international scope to shape what comes next, while building the team and operating model needed to make it successful.
