We are working with an industry leading organisation in Bristol who are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join the company at a time of transformation.
THE ROLE
A Lead Engineer writes code, sets the bar, and looks after a team. You'll take on the team's more complex engineering work; steer the architectural evolution of the systems your team owns, in line with the wider target architecture set by our Solution Architect; and line-manage up to four engineers. It's a senior individual contributor role, a technical lead role, and a line manager role, in roughly equal parts. You'll report to the Head of Software Development and work alongside other Lead Engineers to keep engineering practice consistent across the wider team.
KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead on the team's harder and higher-risk engineering work yourself
- Steer the architectural evolution of your team's systems, aligned with Bud's wider target architecture
- Own code quality and reliability for the systems your team builds
- Manage technical debt and steer the long-term direction of your team's codebase
- Line-manage up to four engineers - 1:1s, performance and development
- Mentor engineers inside and outside your immediate team
- Lead agile ceremonies, planning and estimation with your team
- Contribute to hiring and onboarding
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
- A track record of shipping complex, production-ready software with minimal oversight
- Substantial commercial experience with .NET (C#, ASP.NET, .NET Core)
- Experience with SQL Server
- Hands-on experience working with Azure services
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs
- Front-end experience with Angular and TypeScript / JavaScript / HTML / CSS
- Experience working in an agile environment, including Scrum
- Sound judgement on architectural decisions and the ability to explain trade-offs clearly
- Meaningful mentoring or technical leadership of other engineers
- Readiness to take on (or step further into) formal line management — including the harder conversations
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable:
- Previous line management experience
- Experience contributing to hiring through interviewing or candidate calibration
- Microservices and event-driven architecture
- Azure Cosmos DB
- Docker
- Eligibility for SC Clearance
