This year’s annual report by the Director of Public Health was handed to a group of young changemakers, in order to help shape the conversation around their health and wellbeing. Their findings confirmed that health services in Swindon should be fairer, with a particular focus on improving access to mental health support, expanding affordable opportunities for physical activity, and ensuring young people have a greater voice in shaping the services that affect them.

We’re now seeking a visionary, creative and passionate Director of Public Health to join our Prevention and Communities directorate management team, turn the dial on performance and drive our improvement plans forward.

About the role

As our new Director of Public Health, you’ll work closely with the Corporate Director and play a central role in leading our Prevention and Communities directorate. This is your chance to provide the leadership and cross-organisational foundations for insight, prevention, early intervention and wider determinants of health in our growing, transforming Borough. In this role, you will drive our local response to the NHS 10-year plan and the three big shifts of moving to a digital system of care that’s embedded in the community and prevents ill-health. You’ll also contribute to the Council’s savings plan, through delivering services differently and innovatively. To achieve success, you’ll work collaboratively across the Council and with our key partners to ensure a whole system approach to public health and tackling the key issues in our borough such as homelessness.

This vital role will give you the opportunity to ignite transformation, deliver service excellence and build high performing teams and partnerships. Your purpose will be to change lives, improve places and communities and help build a fairer, better, greener Swindon.

What we’re looking for

We’re seeking a senior leader with significant experience and understanding of public health and the needs of vulnerable families and individuals. You’ll have a proven track record of prevention and improving health outcomes for diverse communities in a local government setting, working with strategic partners and driving service innovation. Your strong strategic leadership and ability to inspire and motivate teams will be essential to our success, as will your ability to manage complex budgets effectively. Prerequisites for shortlisting include public health specialist registration with the GMC, GDC or UKPHR and that you have evidenced significant consultant-level public health experience and a proven track record of establishing effective working relationships to drive health improvement.
