Job Description Summary: The Staff Chaplain provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others, and staff throughout the assigned healthcare setting. The chaplain actively serves as a member of an interfaith pastoral care team, participating in activities such as staff meetings, on-call responsibilities, and providing meaningful worship experiences.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provides direct patient care: Assesses spiritual needs/concerns of patients and their families using clinical pastoral conversation; communicates and documents patient responses to determine effectiveness and alignment with care plans; provides support to healthcare staff. (60%)
  • Participates in on-call rotation: May include overnight or weekend shifts. (10%)
  • Engages in team activities: Participates in patient care conferences, interprofessional team meetings, quality improvement initiatives, policy review, and research projects. (10%)
  • Performs religious/spiritual rituals: Provides appropriate rituals and non-pharmacological interventions; acts as liaison with faith groups and community resources. (5%)
  • Maintains knowledge of medical ethics: Acts as a primary contact for ethics concerns and consultations, understanding issues like advance care planning, organ donation, and patient rights. (5%)
  • Provides care across diverse settings: Includes hospitals, outpatient areas, extended care facilities, and homes. (5%)
  • Contributes to education: Participates as a mentor, preceptor, instructor in clinical pastoral education and offers in-service education to the team. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field, accredited by a recognized agency such as ACPE.
  • Must provide documentation of ordination, endorsement, or good standing within one’s faith tradition.
  • Completion of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, NACC, CASC).
  • Certification or eligibility recognized by major spiritual care organizations.
  • Demonstrated professional ethics and skills aligned with industry standards.
