We have a unique opportunity for an ambitious graduate or early careers professional to join the Safety Services Team at TRL, focused on the research and forensic investigation of road traffic incidents and collisions.
The Safety Services Team encompasses all aspects of TRLs collision investigation activities, covering legal investigations, expert witness work, and collision research activities for both government and industry. This role is in the collision research side of the team, working on exciting and challenging programmes that contribute significantly to road safety the UKand globally.
We are keen to hear from individuals who can demonstrate specific interest and passion in the fields of road safety, collision investigation, vehicle dynamics, or injury causation β whether gained through specialist study or experience. Training will be provided where required and you will be learning from the best:working alongside individuals who share a wide variety of real-world experience and deep expertise in the investigation and analysis of road traffic incidents.
This role will be a mixture of hands-on investigative workin the field, and desk-based data entry and analysis.The successful applicant will be based at TRL Headquarters in Wokingham, Berkshire with travel to live collision scenes for data collection.
Key Duties/Responsibilities
- Visit live collision scenes, collecting valuable vehicle and scene data, whilst maintaining a strong focus on personal safety and adhering to guidelines and procedures;
- Work collaboratively with emergency services and other personnel present at the scene of a collision, or a recovery yard, to ensure the smooth collection of evidence such as photographs and measurements;
- Maintain high ethical standards and behave professionally and with discretion, handling confidential and sensitive information;
- Accurately interpretand analysedata collected from investigationsfor database entry, maintaining high levels of technical quality and data integrity;
- Identify common patterns, trends, and factors associated with road collisions such as road conditions, driver behaviour, and vehicle characteristics to influence proactive measures for collision prevention;
- Be prepared to fully immerse yourself within the TRL team and collaborate with other teams at TRL to contribute to ongoing research projects. Share insights, offer suggestions, and actively participate in meetings and discussions.
About You
Essential:
- Interest in, or prior experience/knowledge of collision investigations, vehicle dynamics and/or human biomechanics;
- Excellent attention to detail and an analytical approach to tasks and problem-solving, able to interpret information, draw conclusions and extract meaningful insights;
- Demonstrable commitment, dedication and initiative to undertake complex investigations to tight timescales and the highest quality;
- Organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage deadlines and multiple tasks concurrently and adapt to changing priorities;
- Confident driver with valid UK Driving Licence;
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal team working skills;
- Able to work professionally and effectively with others when under pressure;
- Fluency in both verbal and written English.
Desirable:
- A degree in a related subject such as Forensic Science, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Biomechanics, or similar, is preferred;
- Experience in data analysis and statistical modelling would be highly advantageous; and
- Experience liaising with and presenting information to external customers would be advantageous.
