The Senior Staff Accountant manages financial operations for government and commercial contracts, focusing on job costing, period closing, balance sheet reconciliations (accruals, % of completion), budgeting, auditing, and ensuring GAAP compliance for complex construction/project-based revenue streams, requiring strong Excel, ERP (like NetSuite), Cost Point Software and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting: Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and monthly/quarterly financial statements, ensuring accuracy.
- Cost & Revenue Management: Handle construction contract accounting, including percentage of completion (POC) recognition, accruals, and intercompany transactions.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist with budget preparation and quarterly forecasts.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and internal controls, often with SOX compliance.
- Process Improvement: Evaluate and implement accounting policies and systems for efficiency.
- Auditing: Provide support and documentation for internal and external audits.
The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of a shipyard prime contractor, with a strong focus on government contracting, job cost accounting, and regulatory compliance. This position works closely with project management, contracts, and leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, cost control, and adherence to federal and maritime regulations.
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Manage job cost accounting for ship repair, new construction, and industrial projects. Track project costs, labor, materials, overhead, and WIP; analyze variances and provide actionable insights. Support government contract accounting requirements (cost-plus, T&M, fixed-price contracts). Ensure compliance with FAR, DFARS, DCAA, and other applicable federal regulations. Assist with indirect rate calculations, overhead allocations, and cost pools. Prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including inventory, AP/AR, accrued expenses, and fixed assets. Support internal and external audits, including DCAA audits. Assist with billing (progress billings, milestone billings, and government invoicing). Collaborate with project managers to monitor budgets, forecasts, and contract performance. Improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
- 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably within shipyard, maritime, defense, or heavy industrial contracting
- Strong knowledge of job cost accounting and project-based financials
- Experience with government contracting and compliance requirements (FAR/DFARS preferred)
- Must be Proficient in ERP/accounting systems, specifically Costpoint
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
