Position Overview: This role will play a pivotal role in supporting the day-to-day financial management and strategic decision-making of the company. Working closely with the Finance Director to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting, robust financial controls, and continuous improvement within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Key responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of financial accounting, reporting, and control across the business.
- Ensure the production of accurate monthly management accounts, board packs, and key performance reports to tight deadlines.
- Support the Financial Director in budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning processes.
- Monitor cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to support operational and investment needs.
- Manage balance sheet reconciliations and ensure all ledgers are maintained to the highest standard.
- Liaise with auditors, ensuring full compliance with accounting standards and tax regulations.
Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of six finance professionals covering accounts payable, credit control, administration, data analyst and management accounts.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure the finance function operates efficiently with clear roles, responsibilities, and measurable outputs.
Business Support:
- Provide proactive financial insights to support operational decision-making.
- Partner with department heads to analyse project profitability, asset utilisation, and cost control.
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Drive system improvements, automation, and process enhancements within the finance function.
Compliance & Risk:
- Ensure adherence to all statutory, regulatory, and corporate compliance requirements.
- Support the Financial Director in managing risk, insurance, and governance processes.
- Oversee VAT, PAYE and other HMRC submissions in line with legislation.
Person specification:
- Qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) with at least 5 years’ post-qualification experience.
- Proven experience in a construction hire, plant hire, or related contracting industry advantageous.
- Strong technical accounting skills with experience in management and statutory reporting.
- Demonstrable ability to manage and develop a finance team within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct or similar).
- Commercially minded, with a focus on accuracy, process improvement, and value creation.
- Great accuracy and attention to detail.
- Experience in leadership and team development.
- Deadline driven with a results orientation.
- Strong problem solving and analytical thinking.
- High levels of integrity and confidentiality.
