Three Bridges Recruitment is exclusively supporting a well‑established not‑for‑profit organisation with the appointment of a Financial Controller. This role will ideally suit an experienced, technically strong Accountant with real breadth and influence. Reporting to the Finance Director, you’ll lead the Financial Control and Ledgers functions ensuring the organisation’s core financial operations are well‑run, compliant, and resilient. This is a role for someone who takes pride in strong fundamentals, clear reporting, and calm leadership, particularly through month‑end, year‑end, and audit. This is not a high‑pressure, commercial environment. The organisation is focused on their long‑term goals and doing things properly. Your expertise will be trusted and relied upon.

What you’ll do

  • You’ll take ownership of the organisation’s financial control environment, including:
  • Leading the production of monthly and annual accounts
  • Owning balance sheet integrity, reconciliations, and the trial balance
  • Managing the external audit process and statutory reporting
  • Acting as the technical lead on VAT, Gift Aid, and tax compliance, including HMRC liaison
  • Overseeing income accounting, cashflow, banking, purchase ledger, and fixed assets
  • Ensuring robust internal controls, policies, and processes are embedded and working well
  • Leading and developing a mixed team of qualified and non‑qualified finance staff
  • Working closely with, and deputising for, the Finance Director when required
  • Systems improvement, recovery & optimisation

About you

  • You’ll be a fully Qualified Accountant with a strong technical grounding and experience operating in complex environments. You’re likely to bring:
  • Proven delivery of annual accounts and audit
  • Strong VAT experience (including Gift Aid)
  • Confidence managing balance sheets and control frameworks
  • Experience leading and developing finance teams
  • Sound judgement, composure, and attention to detail
  • Experience in the not‑for‑profit sector is helpful but not essential, but backgrounds from larger or complex organisations will translate well
