We are currently looking for engineers and scientists to work within our Applied Science engineering and delivery team based at our Dalgety Bay office.

As an apprentice with the Thornton Tomasetti team you are joining a world industry leading engineering consultancy. You will be provided with training and support to develop valuable skills and earn qualifications to establish yourself as a valued member of the Applied Science Team. The programme will follow the Apprenticeship Framework attending college as required, whilst we support you working towards completing a Modern Apprenticeship Design and Draughting, along with support in achieving an NC or HNC in a relevant Engineering discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and updating 2D technical drawings and 3D digital models using industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor or Revit) in accordance with British Standards (BS 8888). Predominantly in the Naval Sector (although not exclusively).
  • Assist the trials and testing senior engineering team in developing design concepts, ensuring all drawings meet project specifications and safety requirements.
  • Maintain and organize the drawing register and "as-built" documentation, ensuring all revisions are tracked and stored in the Common Data Environment (CDE).
  • Perform basic engineering calculations (e.g., dimensions, weights, and material requirements) to support the design process.
  • Participate in site visits or workshop walk-throughs to verify measurements and ensure designs are practical for manufacturing or construction.
  • Work closely with project managers and fabricators to resolve design queries and update drawings based on feedback.
  • Support of Modeling and Simulation team in terms of turning CAD drawings and models into FEA Models (Finite Element Analysis) ready for input into analysis packages.
  • Attend college as part of the Modern Apprenticeship framework and apply theoretical knowledge of engineering principles to real-world office projects.

Requirements

  • We are looking for motivated candidates with a natural aptitude for design and problem-solving, along with a good foundation in Maths, English, and a Technical or Science subject.
  • If you have already gained an NC or HNC in Engineering, or have completed a Pre‑Apprenticeship, we’d love to hear from you.
  • We are also keen to support individuals whose previous apprenticeship may have been unexpectedly displaced.

Qualifications

  • National 5s (SCQF Level 5) or Highers in English, Maths, and a Science or Technical subject (like Graphic Communication or Physics).
  • Experience in working with AutoCAD is preferred but not essential.
  • The ability to visualize 3D objects from 2D plans.
  • Comfortable picking up new software quickly.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong communication, numeracy, and problem‑solving skills.
